Hey now, let's get back to talking about this whole "getting knighted" business! I don't care if it's done by the King of Britain, I just want to be able to be able to sign "Sir David" and have it be legit. :D

It's called bullshit, my friend. Like the people selling land on the moon or
mars, or the nigerian scam. The guy promises you a title, you pay a
hundred quid, and walk away thinking you can now call yourself Lord
Bamblebrogglythorp of Wardnipskiddal. And you can, but you can't sign that
or get treated anything special because its not a real official title, its just a
word you payed for and have no right to.

I get the feeling Kojikun is not exulting in the joy of discover that some of the others here are. :D

If the Knighthood you buy on the net legally makes you Sir *** ***** then it's as good as anything else you can buy on the net, and it does exactly what it says on the tin. It appears to be legal, it's certainly recognised by British law so what the hell, be a knight. I might do it myself if it's only 15 quid. Not £99, but for 15 yes.

But it doesn't thats the point. The only person who can legally knight you is the reigning Monarch.

Partly right, the following extract from a heraldry FAQ site...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can only the Queen of England Make Knights?
The Monarch of England makes Knights, but any sovereign royal holds the right to create Knights. The Queen of England is "regnant," but not all Royals are "regnant," which means currently ruling a country. A non-regnant (non-ruling) Royal can make Knights if the Royal is the Head and Chief of Arms of a Royal House which was once sovereign and regnant and which did not relinquish its sovereignty and regnancy (even in cases where the former lands were confiscated or overrun by force of arms). Furthermore, the religious Orders of Chivalry (both the affiliated and independent ones) can also make Knights. Finally, there are independent Orders of Chivalry, not affiliated with a particular government and not associated with a Church, and operating under their own Charters (issued from a "fons honorum"). The members of independent Orders are also Knights.

English (British) Knights are usually the best-known of the Knights, primarily because the Queen makes Knights of actors and artists who are famous. Further, many in the field of Chivalry consider the exclusive British Order of the Garter to be the premier Order of Chivalry.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't pretend to think my friend will go around ordering people to call him Sir, but he officially has that honorific. It may well be that it's similar to the church thing, an independant order of Knights that's at least recognised as such by the government somewhere is handing out memberships for cash. There are a lot of scams as well of course, you do this kind of nonsense at your own risk.

You're right about the reigning monarch thing, but I would highly doubt that
someone with such responsibility as to knight people would do so at moneys
request. I think they'd be removed from their position very quickly. I would
much like to know where your friend got "knighted", because so far all I see
as evidence is a claim that someone knighted him and it must be legit.
