I got to level two, too tired to figure it out any more. I'll try more tomorrow.

I remember that. Was on alt.2600 a year or so ago...

No, wait, that was another contest...

And having said that, I beat Level 1 easily, but although I have the password for Level 2 the Shockwave submit button isn't working. Well, that's probably because I don't have the Shockwave player (running Linux does that...)

Third: Lvl 8 comes down sometimes, but I think it goes to level 9, where you hack an IRC bot.

How'd you pass lvl 5? I tried to find a VB3 decompiler, but couldn't find one. I'm beginning to think there's some other way, but I haven't found it.

People stuck on level 2: That's the one with flash, right?
http://www.try2hack.nl/levels/level2.swf - right-click that and "save target as". then run a flash decompiler on it.

Level 1: Right-click on the page, click "View Source" but if you didn't get past that, you might just want to stop there.

Yup, I used a decompiler. There is one out there freely downloadable, try searching for Dodi. Initially I tried using a hex editor to look at the exe (but its not quite as obvious as it first looks :) ). The authors drop a big hint for using a decompiler - they've used VB3 for this level, for which decompilers exist; AFAIK there isn't one available for 32-bit VB, which shows up in the next level. Oh and once you do find the password, you'll plainly see that de-compiler use is definitely what the authors expect :)

Now that I've decompiled I can see that you could concievably get the Level 5 answer just through reading the hex, I came close but not quite. Did manage to solve Level 2 looking at the hex (UltraEdit32) instead of the flash decompiler though!

I found level 6 to be the toughest (and most interesting) so far, you'll need more than a text editor for this one!

I got all the way up the screen where it says "LVL1: enter your password", muttered about how this is stupid, and left. Yes, I'm just so good that this is too below me. :D

All I can say is, if you can't get past level 1, you shouldn't be using a computer. Period.

It's still not real hacking. Its practice, at best. Real hacking involves some actual breaking into other computers.

Agreed. But it is very good practice, and a great learning tool to figure out HOW to hack. And I've heard that at lvl 7 and above, you have to do what's considered "real hacking", but uh, I'm on 5 right now, so I dunno. I DO know that on the last level you have to hack an IRC bot...
