The older I grow, I like them more and more. For example, the other day, I came home at 7:45 in the AM, and my parents had just woken up. Me and my friend just walked into the kitchen and started eating, and my mom asked us where we'd been. I told her we were hanging out at my friend's house. She told us we were crazy and went on her way.
At 11:00 AM that day, I went to work, and my coworker was bitching about how strict his father is. My coworker is gay, but his father doesn't know it, and is extremely conservative in every sense of the term. This coworker is 18 years old, but he won't do anything without his father's say-so, and he doesn't even get to keep his paycheck; his father takes it for the family. I keep on telling him that he doesn't have to take that bullshit, but he'll hear none of it. I mean, this guy is whipped. He wanted to rent Queer as Folk, but he was afraid his dad would see it. I told him he should watch it when nobody was around, but he said his dad would find the dvd box.
Anyways, my point is, I'm fucking grateful as hell that my parents are cool. It's not that they don't care what I do, it's that they know not to be afraid. They're confident that they raised me well, and they're right.
EDIT: Am I the only person who always thinks "Queer-Ass Folks" when he sees the name of the show Queer as Folk? Is that intentional? Because if it isn't, boy did they ever pick a title.

And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I love my parents. They're bloody awesome, no way around that. They've always been fair and tolerant and allowed me and my siblings a lot of leeway. That's not to say we were let do anything we wanted, of course not, they were pretty strict about a lot of things, but the only times I've ever heard them use the "because I said so" argument was when they had to deal with my sister's horrible adolescence (it was a bloody nightmare, that's what it was, and it lasted for a good five years), because she wouldn't have listened to any sort of reason anyway.

I do, although they're getting old and grumpy, we never had any major fights.

I have disagreements with them over stupid bullshit, but by and large I have no problem with them, and still like to live at home.

I love my parents, and in my 30's, I'm one of the few to still see the same original two married and together. My love and appreciation for them increased once I'd been away from home for a few years.Trytostaydead wrote:I see a lot of posts about people griping about their parents. Who here actually likes, or God forbid, LOVES their parents? I for one do. Me and my mom have always been close and she spoils me rotten (I think she cooks better than most Korean restaraunts do). Me and my dad weren't too close when I was younger, in fact he was very distant. But as I got older he completely changed and has went from the international man of mystery to a very affectionate doting father. I feel lucky.

Yeah, I just can't really be around my dad for very long at a stretch - it drives both of us crazy, because we're too much like each other. Too strong-willed and independent, and each with our own view of how the world should be (mostly cross-compatible, it's just the niggling differences that cause arguments).

Oh, and my parents are still together, and celebrated their 25th anniversary this year with a trip to Rome.

I love em...for all our weird differences.
We have problems, but eh...for the most part I hope to raise my kids half as well they did me.

Yup, I do. Well, I don't want to be around them sometimes (never visit a historical site with my father -- he gets into long pointless discussions with the tour guide over stuff and occasionally comments or corrects, he thinks, the tour guide right in the middle of the tour), but they really are great.

I've always gotten along with my parents although they both have an annoying habbit of asking when I'm going to get married and have kids, or just when are they going to get some grandchildren?
They've been married for almost 35 years so they've been married almost twice as long as either of them was single. In a way, I think the fact that my parents are only 18 & 19 years older than I am sort of helped them be more understanding as parents. It probably didn't hurt that they both had younger siblings so the gap from dealing with them to dealing with their own kids wasn't very long.

I don't. Standard teenage view. We disagree on many things, and they never admit when they are wrong. They're always breaking their own word and past promises, and lack even the most fundamental understanding of teenagers. I swear they like making rules for the sake of feeling like they're in control.

Speaking as a firstborn teenager who's been subject to the bumbling experiments of my parents, I can only say that I love them deeply. My dad is a hard working, honest, loyal, honorable guy who excells at his job to the point where people ask for him by name, and my mom is the smartest person I know. While they do have no knowledge of teenagers or my life, and I get pissed quite a lot with them, I can't help but love them. They mean the best, and I certainly can't blame them for that!

I gripe sometimes, but I love my mum, she's gone through a lot of crap in her life, but she's oversome it all, and works her ass off to raise myself and my sister.

Once again, I wonder about the connection between Loving, Supportive Parents and Highly Intelligent, Self-Confident Offspring.
All the people who responded that they love and respect one or both parents for raising them with love, respect, and support. Everyone who responded has shown themselves to be intelligent and confident enough to fight for what they believe on any topic that has been presented on these boards.
Therefore, does this mean that Loving Support, tempered with Fair Disclipine, produce a child with the traits of Intelligence, Confidence, and a Willingness to Defend their Ideals?
And back on topic, my parents both worked hard, but they always had time to just stop and give me a hug. I had no doubts, ever, that I was loved. I was also lucky in living next door to my grandma, which had the benefits of someone to run to when I *knew* I was in trouble, and the drawbacks of someone that would tell on me if I *really* misbehaved.

It's hard to express it in words, but I am of the opinion that I have the greatest parents in the known universe.
We havent rowed in about 6 years (am currently 19), we can talk about anything, they encourage me in everything without being intrusive or not involved enough, they help me organise big bashes for things like New Year etc and all my mates think my parents are cool, as they can just naturally get on with all of them. It's a cool thing. We can have discussions about anything, politics, literature, football, we can swear at each other jokingly, its a very liberal household and we're all very happy.
I have no problems with the way they've brought me up, I dont think that theres anything that I would do different, as far as I'm concerned they are the model parents.

I love my parents. It was interesting for me to note as I grew older that my relationship with my parenst slwoly changed and evolved. We went from them being my parents and telling me what to do to becoming annoyances that I could not stand and challeneged until I graduated College and started to live in the real world. Suddenly as i grew older and especially after I had my own child, we became freinds.
Parents are a source of wisdom, trust me they will always be wiser than you. By wiser I mean life experience. My dad may not have a clue how to run a DVD player but he can tell me what to expect in a certain situation. My mom can look at a potential GF and say "You can go ahead and sleep with her but for the love of god don;t marry her." (True quote)
AS a parent I can only hope to emulate my own in raising my child and I too hope that one day my daughter will be on an internetr board writing: "My dad is kickass!"![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
