We'd have the CVN "let's sit around a camp fire and sing" vs CVN "Hey, how old are you again? The enlistment age is still 18 right?"

The closest ship is the USS Walter Mondale. It's a laundry ship sir.

Well, I'd think SSN-23 Jimmy Carter would be pretty prestigious. It is the last of the Seawolf's after all. Considering that the whole SSN-21 thing was an aberation- it's almost as if that SSN was fated to be killed off.

The Simpson's Australia episode, after Homer asks if they're going to land on a carrier.

You'd think that but in fact it’s a clever ploy by the USN. The new SSN-23 is a special operations boat. That means it will never be in the news, nor publicized in any way during its service. However the navy has taken the name out of the loop and given it to a sufficiently large and expensive vessel that no one will complain.

They might not have the ring of say Enterprise, Yorktown, Saratoga, or Lexington. But both men deserve it and the names certainly helped get them built. I'd rather have a super-carrier with a name people think is goofy than a great name on a crappy carrier.

I find it sort of ironic that Jimmy Carter's name would be on any military vessel let alone a special operations ship. I always seem to associate his name with the attempted Iranian hostage rescue SNAFU. I know he was only the president and not the one who planned everything but it still happened under his presidency so in my head the two always associate whether it's warranted or not. :?

That and the allegation (allegation, I say, because nobody ever made anything stick to the man who was rightly dubbed the Teflon President) that Candidate Reagan committed treason by negotiating with the Iranians (with whom his Administration was known to be in bed, see also Iran-Contra) to get them to keep the hostages until after Inauguration Day, 1981.

Nothing proven, but you know, the timing was a little... um... suspicious.

*cough cough* HMS Invincible *hack cough hack*

Pardon me.
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! Well think about it this way. As a special operations boat the missions are mostly going to be highly classified, especially with the new SSGN's handling larger high profile missions. That means where likely only going to hear about theCarter if another black special forces or reconnaissance mission gets fucked up and blown to the public.

What's wrong with that? Remember that Invincible was originaly intended to be a helicopter carrying ASW cruiser, not a carrier.
The real reason to be surprised at that name being used is what happened to the previous Invincible, which really was tragically nisnamed.
