One of the people killed was a 2 year old according to the radio here in CA.
This makes me so mad. Killing 8 people with a car requires some serious negligence. I didnt hear that it might have been a heart attack. I suppose more will come to light soon.

Forget testing old folks, you have as good a chance of that happening as you do reforming Soc Sec.

Saw the story -- there should be some sort of test that determines when someone is simply too old to drive, but what would comprise such a battery of tests, and what would the age threshhold be for requiring them? It's a huge loss of independence for an old person to finally surrender driving priviledges, but it's clear that, as a society, we must eventually draw the line. When, where, and how remain to be answered...

This is ridiculous- in Australia when you reach a certain age you are required to take another driving test so you can demonstrate your continued competence at the wheel. I'm pretty sure of that, anyway.

If testing is implemented, it needs to have considerable flexibility. Age affects people in very different ways, and it should be examined on a case by case basis.

But this story is horrible in the extreme, any way you look at it.

A couple of years ago in Toronto, an old woman somebody at a crosswalk and dragged the body for more than a kilometer to her home. She got out of the car, totally oblivious to the kilometer-long ribbon of blood and entrails she'd left on the road, called her son, and told her that she arrived home OK.

Obviously, it was not difficult to track her down, given that she'd basically left a giant arrow pointing to her home. Her daughter insisted that she's "basically a good driver"

TORONTO (CP) -- A fatal accident in which an 84-year-old driver is accused of striking a pedestrian and dragging her several blocks under her car has touched off debate about whether seniors are safe behind the wheel.

Police have not determined if age played a role in the deadly incident, but safety activists cited studies Wednesday that suggest driving abilities deteriorate as a person gets older.

Still, the Canada Safety Council says forcing seniors to hang up their car keys would be a disservice to society, making the elderly virtual shut-ins or leaving responsibility for their transport to their families.

A 43-year-old pedestrian was struck Tuesday at a crosswalk and dragged for almost one kilometre before the vehicle turned into a residential driveway. There, the woman's body dislodged and slumped, as the car headed for the garage.

The body sat on the driveway for 30 minutes before a neighbour made the grisly discovery around 10:30 p.m. and phoned police.

Pilar Hicks was charged with failing to stop causing death and careless driving.

Interesting that this should come up, but as I was browsing CNN's website for another article, this came up as the headline news story.

86-year old man kills 9 in his Buick.

Apparently he mistook his gas for his brake. 9 were killed, 14 were critically injured, and 54 were hurt. Among the dead and critically injured are children under the age of 3.

Don't you people have to take your drivers license again(refresher course along with a medical) when you're like 50-60? We do here in finland anyway.

I think in some states you do, but I'm not 100% sure.

I say that someone's liscence should expire when they reach a certain age, and after getting it renewed, they need to renew it each year after that, perhaps even more frequently than that as the person gets older. Hopefully, it should weed out some of the senile geezers.

There will not be, the reason: Seniors vote. They vote in droves. If some politician proposes such a law, AARP will be all over their ass like a bad rash. Safety doesn't mean shit to these people.

I know of no such tests in any of the states in which I've lived. I took a practical driver's test when I wa 16, and never again...

Same here. However, in Arizona after you turn 21 your new license (with out the big red "Under 21" on it) is good until your 65th birthday. After that I think you have to renew it every five years. I think the DMV is primarilly checking for a decline in people's eyesight. I don't know if they do any other testing, although there might be some random drivinging tests for anyone renewing their liscense.

Well here you don't get your drivers license until you're 18, and then you only have a temporary license for about 1-1½ years, then you are required to complete the second stage, then you get your real license, I think that it lasts maybe 30-40 years, then you have to renew it.

In all seriousness, even the ones who can't drive still vote. Seniors get bused from the retirement homes to the ballot boxes every election. They actually understand how democracy works, and that is why politicians kiss their old wrinkly ass during every campaign.
