Do you have a "smart" cell phone?

Yes, I have a PocketPC cell phone (bows lowly to Bill Gates).

Ultimate "Smart" Phone

Post by jegs2 »

...and I have recently obtained official permission from my wife to obtain one from Sprint PCS, just as soon as they are available. Here's what a Handspring Treo 600 looks like:

Image

From this website, here is the scoop on this wonderous device:
Exciting design features include:

  • A great everyday mobile phone—designed with the smaller, narrower look and feel of a mobile phone

Fast Palm OS 5 organizer running on an ARM processor

Fully-integrated QWERTY keyboard—optimized for this amazingly compact device—makes dialing the phone or typing email and messages easier than ever

New web browser that allows you to surf any web site—including JavaScript enabled sites—and even download software

Built-in digital camera so you can take and send pictures in an instant or connect a face to a phone number with picture caller ID

Built-in SD/MMC expansion slot for adding memory, content or hardware (supports SD I/O)

Five-way navigation for optimal one-handed use

Improved battery life for longer talk time and standby time

Bright color display that provides great readability both indoors and out
In an "in your face" to Bill Gates and Micro$oft, the new Treo 600 will run on Palm OS 5, so it ain't a Pocket PC. This will be the device that at long last replaces my current one, which has served me well over the last year:

How much does one of those cost? Is there anything you have to do to get the internet capabilities? If some miracle of nature gives me the money for one, I just might get it.

And no, I don't have a cell phone as of now.

While I hate cell phones and other mobile devices for their major role in the Conspiracy to Annoy the Fuck Out of Me, that is a mighty cool phone.

It will run for around $500 to begin with, then it'll drop down about $100 over the first six months to a year.
Is there anything you have to do to get the internet capabilities?
Just have to have internet included with your plan. I can post to this website with my current Handspring phone. But I'm shut off from some Java-heavy sites (MSN mail), so the new phone will be able to surf all sites...

On my current Handspring it does, if I'm using graffiti (stylus strokes on the sensor). If I've got it plugged into my portable keyboard, I'm limited only by the speed of the phone's modem. On the Treo 600, there's a tiny keyboard built-in and the modem is supposed to be considerably faster. For me, the key will be full web-browsing capabilities, which are now limited with my current smartphone.

Bought it in two pieces. The Handspring Visor Prism is a separate organizor, while the Sprint PCS Digital Link is a separate Springboard module. The visor itself cost about $150 refurbished, while the Digital Link was about $200. Unfortunately, Handspring discontinued the Visor series, so you can get them only as refurbished units.

Mine
Image

Water proof, shock proof, a mobile phone for an adventurous lifestyle (that's me). It does everything a phone is supposed to do, and has a good battery. With it and my laptop I access the internet from any remote spot of Europe. Which also comes in handy for a person with an adventurous lifestyle (me). I don't need a phone with fancy gymnicks who will break at the first Bike fall. This one is an elegant phone, for more civilized times.

Bottom line is, in a straight fight, mine>yours.

I was going to get a cell phone, but then I decided I didn't want to pay money every month for something I'd probably only use every other week, for like two minutes.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I have a bog standard 8310.

But well, smartphones are so last month.

It's all about videophones now. 3G is the way forward.

:? Here, we have packages free of monthly charge. You just pay more for each phone call (which would be ideal in your case).

I honestly fail to see the point of shoving all that shit onto a cellphone. If one wanted all those features, they should've bought a Palm, H/PC, or a PocketPC. My ancient analog cellphone from 1999/2000 works just fine for me.

I don't have a cell phone, and I don't really want one. I'd take one if someone gave it to me, but I wouldn't pay for it.

I recently replaced my Nokia with a newer one. The newer one is bettter sounding and has longer battery life. Its a little too small for my taste but Im getting used to it. Im starting to get into the practice of using my cell phone as a contact manager, but I never forsee me using a PalmPilot/Phone combo anytime soon.

Not likely. I don't go to the middle of nowhere; there's nothing worth seeing there.

Realistically, all I would use my phone for would be to call my friends when I get off work to see where they are, and then to sometimes coordinate with them while we're doing things. As it is, I simply go home to use the phone there to see where they are, and when things need coordination, we stop and discuss before doing things.

It's possible that if I got a phone, I would start using it a lot, though. That doesn't really justify the expense, however, seeing as I get along fine without it, and I'd really rather not blow 30-40 dollars/month on such a luxury, when instead I can buy 1-4 additional DVDs per month.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'
