did you even read this thread? did you read the criteria? regardless of what you THINK the Bronze Star is, there is a qualified set of criteria for it, and nowhere on there does it say "Go ask some guy from Freemont what he thinks" [/quote]
Are you trolling or stupid? Since Stavo posted a thread about WHY? to the board my opinion was solicted as was yours. Or are you saying we are not supposed to participate in the board? Well??????
As to the criteria I think what Stravo and I want to know is what did she do that was heroic or meritorious besides get captured? If she did something heroic fine, but thats why Stravo posted the thread in the first place. What did she do?
If the award is all about politics and showing a pretty face to the public, it is a disservice to the other members of the armed forces who truely deserve the appropiate medal.

Like I said on Spacebattles, they've already made Private Lynch America's Darlin' Little GI; the picture wouldn't be complete unless they decorated her as much as possible. I just don't see what she did that makes her actions any more heroic than any other soldiers who faught in that conflict. Lots and lots of men saw combat in Iraq, and many of them accomplished alot more than Pfc. Lynch did, who actually accomplished nothing in the face of the enemy.
Really, if they are going to give her a medal, it should be one given to her because her story was a propaganda goldmine for rallying troops and civilians at home alike. After all, she's young and pretty and blonde and in the nefarious clutches of the evil Iraqis, which is fantastic copy for the media. Only right they give her a medal, since she did far far more for her country being GI Barbie in Chains than she actually did in the field of battle.

Stravo:
To get a few things a straight. Lynch never claimed any of the stuff you're saying she did. It's been her story that she can't remember most of the ordeal; the most she remembers is a fuzzy recollection of the rescue. Given a concussion or other head injury that makes sense.
It's others, more specifically the media, that have advanced the story of her fighting to the death. Even the Pentagon doesn't claim that. And as for her injuries, media rumor mongering. Again, the Pentagon kept mostly silent about that and did not endorse the media account.

What I want to know is, what did her First Sergeant get? That guy sounded like a real hero in all those battle accounts I read, but he died in action... He should've gotten something for sure beyond a Purple Heart and Campaign Ribbons.

since then we have discovered the established criteria for discerning merit regading the Bronze Star. She meets the established qualificatons.TrailerParkJawa wrote: Are you trolling or stupid? her convoy was attacked by iraqi forces. she was critically injured in the attack. despite critical injuries she attempted to resist. Further posts have established that military personnel have been awarded the honor for such actions as studying sand fleas with the packistani army and provideing support and logistics from as far away as the pentagon. concession accepted.TrailerParkJawa wrote:As to the criteria I think what Stravo and I want to know is what did she do that was heroic or meritorious besides get captured? this instance of the award's presentation is not entirely about politics. she has earned this award like some in previous conflicts. She was critically injured in direct combat with the enemy, attempted to resist, and was taken prisoner. She wasn't given the Medal of Honor or the Silver Star(which some pundits suggested she be nominated for early on). If it were i would be siding with you and Stravo. Her Bronze Star also does not carry the V for valor on it's ribbon. This is an appropriate decoration.TrailerParkJawa wrote:If the award is all about politics and showing a pretty face to the public, it is a disservice to the other members of the armed forces who truely deserve the appropiate medal.

I was wrong about the source. According to this her PARENTS were telling people she had been stabbed and shot and they in tuen claimed a military official told them so. The doctor in Ramstein faltly denied the wounds were as the parents were telling the tale.

And finally a transcript of a discussion regarding the events a few months later that point to the raid probably being a staged event and that at one point the Iraqi doctors put her in an ambulance to drive her to the American lines and American fire forced them back.

CNN's initial story:Doctors find bullet wounds on Lynch
Saturday, April 05, 2003
By Lawrence Walsh, Post-Gazette Staff Writer
PALESTINE, W.Va. -- Parents of Jessica "Jessi" Lynch will fly to Germany this afternoon, a day after learning their daughter had suffered gunshot wounds that went undetected for days.
The Iraqi family that provided vital information in the rescue of POW Jessica Lynch rests Thursday night at Camp Liberty, Iraq. The family was welcomed by Marines who greeted them with food, clothing and an American flag. (United States Marine Corp, Sgt. L.A. Salinas via AP) Related story: Jockeying begins for Jessica Lynch movie
Gregory Lynch Sr. and his wife, Deadra, are scheduled to fly from Charleston, W.Va., early this afternoon to join their daughter, the Army private first class who was taken to the military's Landstuhl Regional Medical Center after being rescued from an Iraqi hospital on Tuesday.
Family member Dan Little last evening told reporters and photographers gathered at the end of the family's dirt and gravel driveway in this tiny town that the Lynches "finally" heard from their daughter's doctor yesterday. The doctor told them that, in addition to a back injury, two broken legs and a broken right arm that had previously been diagnosed, Lynch had been shot with a small-caliber weapon, hit once each in her right arm and left leg.
Lynch, 19, underwent back surgery on Thursday, and yesterday, surgeons inserted rods and pins in her arms and legs to help them heal properly. But the gunshot wounds were not found until "an extensive probing and examination" was conducted, Little said. He said he didn't know why doctors initially failed to find the wounds.
In response to a reporter's question, Little said the Lynches were "understandably frustrated" by their inability to speak to their daughter's doctor until they heard from him yesterday afternoon.
Little said Lynch was placed in an intensive care unit "purely for observation." She had a low-grade infection and a temperature of 102, but that was dropping yesterday and her condition was improving.
The information Little provided differed from an account given early yesterday morning by hospital commander Col. David Rubenstein, who insisted Lynch had not been shot or stabbed. The Lynches, too, had been given that information yesterday. Little said the new information was given to them by her doctor in the phone call yesterday afternoon.
Rubenstein, who described Lynch as "a daughter any parent would be proud of," said Lynch is speaking to military officials in Germany, though the sessions have not delved into the details of her treatment by her captors. She still spends much of her days asleep or in the operating room.
Rubenstein said Lynch would require intensive physical therapy after her injuries heal. But doctors believe her prognosis is excellent. No date has been set for her return to the United States.
Despite the seriousness of her injuries, Rubenstein said Lynch was buoyant. "Her emotional state is extremely good," he said. "She is jovial, she is talking with staff."
Lynch is receiving psychological counseling from people who specialize in dealing with prisoners of war. She is also talking -- and joking -- with a friend from her unit, who went with her to Germany.
Lynch's arrival in Germany has set off a media stampede, with emissaries of television talk-show hosts importuning hospital officials to pass notes to her.
It is not clear that Lynch yet understands the magnitude of her celebrity. She does not have a television in her room, and the staff is zealously guarding access.
In other ways, however, Lynch is taking steps back to a normal life. Though she is still being fed through an intravenous tube, doctors expect her to be able to eat solid foods soon, and she has submitted a list of her favorites. Atop the list: turkey, apple sauce and steamed carrots.
In Gettysburg, Pa., yesterday, the mother of a Marine sergeant said she received an e-mail from her son, indicating that he was part of the successful rescue of Lynch.
"I just wanted to let you know that we are finally war heroes," Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. William "Joe" Morehead, 39, wrote in the e-mail message to his mother, Bonnie Hammond. "We pulled out the POWs last night. ... Makes me feel as if it was all worth it. It's time to come home for sure. I'm tired of getting shot at."
The Pentagon announced this morning that eight of the eleven bodies recovered when commandos rescued Lynch have been identified as members of her unit, the 507th Maintenance Company, who died in the March 23 ambush. Included among the dead are two soldiers from Cleveland, Master Sgt. Robert J. Dowdy and Pvt. Brandon U. Sloan, 19.
Lynch's parents will hold a news conference at 1:30 this afternoon at the West Virginia state hangar at Yeager Airport in Charleston before leaving for Germany. It is not known if they are flying by commercial, military or private aircraft.

SPECIAL REPORT
RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany (CNN) -- U.S. Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued after spending more than a week as a prisoner of war in Iraq, arrived in Germany for treatment of her wounds shortly after midnight Wednesday (5 p.m. EST).
About 24 hours earlier, U.S. troops fought their way into Saddam Hospital in Nasiriya that was doubling as a military post and carried her to safety.
The daring helicopter mission, conducted under cover of night, was described by U.S. Central Command as a "classic joint operation" involving Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, Marines, Air Force pilots and command controllers.
After touching down in Germany aboard at C-17 military transport plane, the 19-year-old Lynch was taken by ambulance to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.
Her brother, Greg Lynch, said military officials told the family his sister had "multiple wounds" and that both her legs had been broken as a result of gunshots. Military officials said she was in stable condition.
Jessica Lynch, a supply clerk with the 507th Maintenance Company from Fort Bliss, Texas, was able to speak briefly to her family in her hometown of Palestine, West Virginia, after she arrived at Landstuhl.
"Real scared and weak, but spirited" was how her father, Gregory Lynch Sr., 43, described his daughter's voice.
When asked what she said, he replied, "Just that she hasn't eaten in eight days and she's hungry, she wants some food."
"She knows she's injured and they're doing their best to get her so that she can travel again," said her brother, Greg Lynch, also a private in the Army. "She said she's tired, she wants to rest."
Watching his sister's arrival at the air base on a television monitor, Greg Lynch said he felt relieved. "It brings tears to my eyes and a smile to my face," he told CNN.
The family had no information on when Jessica might return to the United States.
A convoy of Lynch's unit was ambushed March 23 by Iraqi forces near Nasiriya after it apparently took a wrong turn.
Seven other members of 507th Maintenance Company remain missing, five are prisoners of war and another is listed as killed in action. At least four members of the unit were wounded.
Lynch's family was jubilant Wednesday morning when they heard the news. "I think everybody heard all the screaming and shouting that was going around," her father said with a gentle laugh.
"We love her and the little brat's caused a big stir in this county," the self-employed trucker said with a grin that reflected both his relief and his joy.
The youngest of the Lynches, 18-year-old high school senior Brandy, has already enlisted in the Army and is scheduled to start training in August. Her sister's experience has not had a negative effect on her desire to serve, she said.
"It makes me want to do it even more," the blue-eyed Brandy Lynch said. "It's the Lynch blood."
Firefights surround raid
During the raid early Wednesday, members of rescue team fought their way into the hospital, found Lynch and fought their way out.
Green-cast night scope video provided by U.S. Central Command showed troops carrying Lynch from the hospital and onto an Black Hawk helicopter
A color still photograph showed an almost smiling rescued soldier surrounded by her comrades in arms, an American flag on her chest.
A man taken into custody during the assault led U.S. troops to 11 corpses -- nine in a "grave area" and two in a morgue -- said U.S. Central Command briefing officer Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks in Doha, Qatar.
Troops attend to Lynch after her dramatic rescue.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether any of the bodies were those of soldiers from Lynch's unit, said Central Command spokesman Capt. Frank Thorpe.
Despite the barrage of hostile gunfire entering and leaving Saddam Hospital, there were no coalition casualties among the rescue team, Brooks said.
"It takes a brave bunch of people to risk their own lives to go in and free a hostage," said Gregory Lynch Sr. "We didn't even know she was captured, you know. Last we knew she was just missing in action."
CNN correspondents Jason Bellini, Tom Mintier and Alessio Vinci contributed to this report.
EDITOR'S NOTE: CNN's policy is to not report information that puts operational security at risk.
And finally a transcript of a discussion regarding the events a few months later that point to the raid probably being a staged event and that at one point the Iraqi doctors put her in an ambulance to drive her to the American lines and American fire forced them back.
PM - Stories from the war zone

Reporter: Nick Grimm
MARK COLVIN: Remember the media hysteria surrounding the rescue of the American Private Jessica Lynch from an Iraqi hospital?
Somehow, the American authorities let it be known that Private Lynch had fought like a lion against overwhelming odds before her Iraqi captors took her to a hospital in Nasiriyah.
To complete the script, there was then a dangerous special forces raid to free her. Now, though, the Pentagon itself says Private Lynch was not injured battling Iraqi soldiers. All her injuries came from the original vehicle collision.
The way that her story of capture and rescue were re-invented for the public have again raised questions about the quality of the information provided before, during and after the war.
Nick Grimm has our report.
NEWS REPORT: Dramatic images of the rescue of Private Jessica Lynch.
NICK GRIMM: It had Hollywood screenplay written all-over it.
NEWS REPORT: Both her legs are broken, she has a broken arm and gun shot wounds, but her family is over joyed.
ARI FLEISCHER: The President's reaction was 'that's great'.
NICK GRIMM: Certainly, all the elements seemed to be there: a young and photogenic American soldier, who had fought until her weapon's last bullet in a failed attempt to avoid capture by Iraqi soldiers, who then suffered torture and mistreatment at the hands of her captors until the staging of a dramatic and dangerous rescue operation.
NEWS REPORT: The return of Jessica Lynch sounds more like a movie script. And it probably will be soon.
ARI FLEISCHER: But there's no question this is a good day, a good moment, and the President is very proud of what took place.
NICK GRIMM: At the time Private Jessica Lynch's story provided coalition military commanders with some positive news for the world's media.
VINCE BROOKS: PFC Jessica Lynch. At this point she is safe.
NICK GRIMM: General Vince Brooks.
VINCE BROOKS: She's been retrieved and some brave souls put their lives on the line to make this happen. Loyal to a creed that they know, that they will never leave a fallen comrade and they will never embarrass their country.
NICK GRIMM: But now it appears the Private Lynch story was just that – a good story, which seems to have undergone several major departures from the facts. So what really occurred during the incident in the early days of the Iraq war, when Private Lynch's unit, the 507th maintenance company, engaged with the enemy?
For a start, reports of her comrades being executed were wrong.
ARLENE WALTERS: I think he died standing out there in the sand, fighting.
NICK GRIMM: This is Arlene Walters, mother of one of those killed, Sergeant Donald Walters.
ARLENE WALTERS: If he was standing out there fighting them by himself, which I think he was, I think credit where credit's due.
RANDY KEEL (phonetic): When this all started there was talk of public executions and now having read through this, Janey, my wife and I know that James did not die as a public execution, that he died defending what he went to do.
NICK GRIMM: Randy Keel, whose son James Keel, also died in the ambush. Now the families of those killed, captured or injured are finally learning what happened. According to a Pentagon report, blunders and malfunctions contributed to the deaths of 11 soldiers and the capture of six others.
After 70 hours on the road, racing across the Iraqi desert, the soldiers took a wrong turn, blundered into an ambush by the Iraqi army, then struggled to defend themselves as their weapons jammed because they will filled with dust. In the ensuing confusion, one of their vehicles apparently ran out of petrol.
Survivor Sergeant Curtis Campbell.
CURTIS CAMPBELL: Came to find that someone was stuck in the truck at the back and they never made it out, they never made it through the ambush at all.
NICK GRIMM: Private Lynch's humvee crashed into another American army vehicle, causing the only injuries she sustained. After her rescue, her parents claimed that military doctors told them she had received bullet wounds. That was false.
Meanwhile the Iraqi doctors who cared for Jessica Lynch until her dramatic rescue by American Special Forces have also cast doubt on claims she was tortured or mistreated.
Rather, they talk of how attached hospital staff became to the polite young girl from West Virginia and how they attempted to return her to American forces, but her ambulance driver was shot at a checkpoint in the process.
Questions are also being asked about whether coalition commanders over-exaggerated the danger of the rescue operation.
AMERICAN MILITARY REPRESENTATIVE: There was not a fire fight inside of the building I will tell you, but there were fire fights outside of the building getting in and getting out.
NICK GRIMM: According to civilians at the hospital, when American Special Forces arrived, Iraqi forces were long gone.
MARK COLVIN: Nick Grimm reporting.
Wherever you go, there you are.

Abso-fucking-lutely. The worst part of the matter is that none of this undue recognition is really any of her fault. One thing, she's being shot at, the next, she's a POW, then she's rescued, and all of a sudden, she's a fucking hero. I doubt she really grasps just how much the media has blown her story out of proportion.Gil Hamilton wrote:Like I said on Spacebattles, they've already made Private Lynch America's Darlin' Little GI; the picture wouldn't be complete unless they decorated her as much as possible. She deserves at least the Purple Heart, the Prisioner of War Medal, and whatever unit citations her fellow soldiers may recieve. The Bronze Star is pushing it quite a bit. Don't get me wrong, there are some in her unit that definately deserve that award, but not her.

Considering who it's been awarded to before, and for what, I don't think this is anything to really get upset about. The Bronze Star has, bluntly, been devalued to the point of worthlessness, and if one desires a medal of similar rank that has any real value, a new one should be created and its awarding be more strictly limited.Wicked Pilot wrote:She deserves at least the Purple Heart, the Prisioner of War Medal, and whatever unit citations her fellow soldiers may recieve.
