A question about 'black helicopters'
I was curious why so many people joke about the infamous 'black helicopters'. Is there a specific urban legend about one, or is it a generalized joke about conspiracy theories/ists?
The reason I ask is because several years ago I helped build a house way out in the hills of Tennessee, a big house on a bluff overlooking the Cumberland River. Once or twice a week, a helicopter, painted jet-black, with no markings whatsoever, would fly low over the river late in the afternoon. I remember thinking, "hmm, they do exist," but never giving it much more thought.
Years later, enter sdnet, and people joke about black helicopters here. I've never heard any speak of them in anything but a joking tone (here or elsewhere), and was curious about the origin of the humour.
TIA

Conspiracy nutjobs believe that the UN has a secret army and a huge force of black helicopters which will swoop in and seize control of the Continental United States in order to establish the New World Order that is prophesied by the Book of Revelations, prior to judgement day, the coming of the Antichrist, yadda yadda yadda.

Interesting. I figured it was similar to UFOs and such, not something specific per se, but a whole gang of stories.
We always thought that the 'copter we saw was the DEA, looking for marijuana, TN's biggest cash crop. Every few months, someone was getting busted with huge grow operations, some indoors, some not.

It does. The conspiracy nutjobs believe that the entire US government is already infiltrated by this AntiChrist-led UN organization, and that the more shadowy organizations like the CIA are already in the service of the New Order.Howedar wrote:Thats the black helicopter bit? Eh? I always thought the Black Helicopters were kind of the MIB thing, part of the UFO conspiracy cover-ups and such.Darth Wong wrote:It does. I once saw a show on Discovery about the helicopters connected with cattle mutilations. A theory was that in areas which had nuclear weapon tests, some organization was using the 'copters as transport and laser cutters to sample animal tissues.

Yea... thats much easier then buying a few cows..... Its shit like this that gives conpiracies a bad name, e ven though some of them are prefectly plausible and have evidence to support them.Grand Moff Yenchin wrote:I once saw a show on Discovery about the helicopters connected with cattle mutilations. Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Black helicopters are like black un-marked vans and black sedans and suvs. They're all indicative of some secret government or black ops thing.
For example, if I said I were coming in with my black helicopter to abduct <insert SDnet member here>, it's a jab with a slight black ops, government conspiracy spiced to it.

Re: A question about 'black helicopters'
Likely US Army Special Forces running around. They use a huge chunk of the South and Midwest for training operations, flying from one military base to the other to simulation insertions and missions. There MH-60's are generally not painted all black, but will look it in poor lighting. Though they generally fly in pairs.Drewcifer wrote:

I want to know just who these conspiracy nutjobs think are filling the ranks of all these various secret armies. Where do they all live? Who pays them? Where can I sign up?
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I'm fuckin' sayin'. I wouldn't mind being a soldier for the UN (and not one of those dopey bluehats on loan from member countries). That would kick ass.3rd Impact wrote:Thats a good point. And as far as the conspiracy retards go, the fact that they dream up such armies is pretty funny, because it strikes me as immensely childish. They find no problem with having hordes of nameless, faceless enemies, like you would find in a video game or bad action movie.

Re: A question about 'black helicopters'
hmm. I looked up some MH-60's on google. Didn't look quite right, but then again, we were on top of a 300' bluff, looking down at the river (and the 'copter), and, we were looking south, into the late afternoon winter sun, so it's hard to say exactly. I'm sure there were no markings though -- at least discernable from 1/4 mile away -- is that common for certain military aircraft?Sea Skimmer wrote:Likely US Army Special Forces running around. I'm sure it was military or DEA or something, I was just curious.

I think some of the unmarked black helicopters are ordinary privately-owned helicopters who happens to be painted black.
Others are probably very dark green militiary 'copters, since dark green can be mistaken for black in certain conditions.

Re: A question about 'black helicopters'
Some Special Forces helicopters basically have their markings painted over for low visibility. But at a quarter mile you should be able to pick something out of regular army or law enforcement aircraft. Though most Police/DEA/FBI helicopters are fairly lightly colored anyway.Drewcifer wrote:
