Just a couple of thoughts
Maybe this would fit in better in Other Sci-Fi since you're treating the ST novels as a sort of alternate universe.
It might also be easier for debating purposes to take specific aspects of a given novel and discuss their potential impact in a "What If?" scenario rather than tossing in entire novels. That might keep the confusion and inconsistency to a minimum. It would also make it easier for anyone who's interested in the debate to quantify the changes.

Actually, I have a structure in mind for the project. However, I wasn't expecting to have to have it ready yet. (I was expecting more like "What do you have in mind?" and "Depends how you want to do it", etc, not a proverbal avalanche of issues so quickly)
I shall post it before Friday. Depends on if I can get it done before then. My girlfriend takes priority over online hobbies.

I'm giving it a couple more days since the original poster did say this would be a slant on the versus enviroment.
If not...off to PST it'll go.

The slant is building up a Trek universe using the novels that could be put into continuality, and new technologies from the books that could be explained in terms of Trek, etc. As each book is looked at, it would be added to the universe and discussed in both a pure Trek enviroment, as well as the versus environment

Yes, but the only it's staying here for a little bit longer is that your opening statement...aside from that, no real reason.
No one has taken it up, and nothing has been done...thus it's looking more and more like that it will be an informative thread about ST novels.

This is very problematic--the transporter on continuous beam would destroy everything that goes into it, because nothing can be put whole into the beam simultaneously. A person walking into the beam would be shredded atomic cross-section by cross-section and come out as mincemeat (or atoms) on the other side.Solauren wrote:Transporter Revelations
If the transporter is on a continuous beam, anything matter sent into it is beamed, even if it is part of a larger object. For example:
A kreel fell into the transporter beam. Only it’s head and shoulders were in the beam. The transporter beams just the head and shoulders, killing the Kreel

That's probably what happened. The head was not desintegrated all at once, but continuously as it intercepted the beam. To an outside viewer, though, it seemed that the entire head had disappeared after touching the transporter beam.JodoForce wrote: This is very problematic--the transporter on continuous beam would destroy everything that goes into it, because nothing can be put whole into the beam simultaneously. Which, brings up a possible anti-boarding device for the Federation to use against the Empire.
Inspired by 'Star Trek The Next Generation, Book 5, Strike Zone'
Replace Forcefields with low surface area transporters with the beam in the shape of a forcefield. Proximity activated.
Stormtrooper steps into it's field of view, and beam off a chunk.
Better tactic
Make it mobile, like an exacomp (examples of transporters that small have been hinted at) and have them bean out chunks of the stormtrooper.
Feasible
Possible
Replace shields with transporter fields to beam incoming weapons fire off. Say back at the acting imperial ship
Feasibliy depends on the nature of the technology. Which requires more power, shields or the transporter

So what you're syaing is that Federation transporters can now beam incoming fire back at their opponent? you come up with more hypothetical situations than my six year old little brother.
#1- where the hell are the generating this sort of power, maybe they are rerouting the same energy that makes bridge terminals explode?
#2- your low surface transporter Idea? Retarded, much cheaper and more efficient to use a FUCKING LAND MINE
#3- Make it mobile? Like those ridiculous Houdini mines the Dominion was using? there are plenty of people around here including myself htatcan tell you how ridiculous that is. Also, transporters that small such as the ones depicted in Nemesis only have enough power for one personto beam, so it would a very expensive one shot unit and would required more materials than other, more feasible methods.
#4- more feasible would be to replace Federation shielding with large extendable white flags.
#5- Stormtropers come in waves, with large amoutns of weaponry, just because you give one an ornate death doesn't mean the tactic is effective or intelligent.
#6-
#7- If you get to utilize alternate universe Star Trek fantasies for the debate then here is mine. THe EMpire magically reverse enginners a replicator. And then builds dozens of huge ones that replicate Star Destroyers and Death Stars one Planet Killing Sector Fleet at a time.
Vaya Con Fucking Dios!

All the iterations of this have the same problem -- any opponent exposed to this could just as easily be killed by other, more reliable means. This is especially problematic with transporters, given how vulnerable they've been demonstrated to be to environmental factors.Solauren wrote:Which, brings up a possible anti-boarding device for the Federation to use against the Empire.

Stormtrooper steps into it's field of view, and beam off a chunk.
Other non-technical problems:
1) This might be a little too harsh for Federation sensibilities, though I'm not sure if you're factoring those kinds of concerns in at this stage.
2) If you've got troops in range of a transporter, why not simply transport them and hold them in a pattern buffer ala Scotty in "Relics" until you can safely disarm and interrogate them? This also has the time-tested advantage of giving surrendering enemy troops in a tight spot some empetus to surrender since the Feds can demonstrate they treat enemy soldiers mercifully. This probably won't work for all troops (the SW Stormtroopers seem pretty hard-assed in that regard) and might be seen contemptuously by some of the Imperial higher-ups, but the line troops might take it into consideration.
3) I still don't think this would make any practical difference in an STvSW fight. They lose a few stormtroopers in an ugly way? Who cares? With the sheer mass of men and materiel available, that's like coming up with tactics to stomp fleas while a herd of elephants is bearing down on you.
Stormtrooper Officer: "They're mangling the men, sir."
Imperial Officer: "Fuck 'em, then. We'll just blow up the ship. Power up a light turbolaser."
BTW, I don't mean the latter to discourage you from developing some of the ideas in the novels as an intellectual exercise. In fact, I'd suggest you do that first and try to build a coherent alternate ST universe and then apply it to any versus debates.

The Federation might be shooting itself in the proverbial foot with transporter warfare -- it would be pretty ineffective compared to conventional weapons systems, and accounts of Federation "atrocities" would give the Emperor's forces a good way to justify the construction and deployment of more superweapons.
First, my replies to my transporter idea
Darth FanBoy
First, don’t confuse my age with your social IQ. It’s easy to tell the difference. Your Social IQ is 1/3th my age, and is the number with only 1 digit.
Now then, back on topic…
Beaming incoming fire back at an opponent: Depends. Energy discharges, probably not. We’ve never seen the effect a transporter beam has on an ‘beam’ weapon like a Phaser, Disruptor, and possibly Turbolasers They probably could transport warheads and missiles and the like (i.e Proton Torpedoes), and if Turbolasers are largely plasma-based (depends on who you ask if they are or not. Personally, I don’t think they are, but hey, if they are plasma-based), then probably. If Turbolasers are not plasma –or some other form of matter- then it would be a useless defense.
Are there any canon Star Trek examples of a Phaser beam being stopped by a transporter? Or other energy weapons? My proof of moving matter like a torpedo is the ‘sniper rifle’ from DS9 that shot a bullet that was then ‘beamed’ close to the target. Little transporter for little bullet, big transporter for incoming warheads.
Power Generation: Unknown. We have no idea what kind of power requirements are needed for a Star Trek transporter. It could be several dozen megawatts, it could be 2 monkeys on treadmills. If power requirements are LOW, then it’s feasible.
Is there a canon statement of power-requirements for the transporter? Lacking any either way, it’s a possiblity. If power-requirements for that are shown to be too high, yeah, chuck the idea. You’d be better off adding another shield if the power requirements are too high.
Land Mines: I agree with you, Land minds would be more feasible. However, can you really see Starfleet putting land minds on ships? This might be less practical, but then again, so are warp cores that are as problematic as easily as Enterprise-D’s have been shown to be. This solution might be unrealistic, but it’s –IN-UNIVERSE- style. Right up there with ‘Transphasic Torpedoes’ and ‘Ablative Armor Generators’. Unrealistic, but they decided to do it anyawy.
Mobility: I wasn’t referring to the ‘houdini mines’. I was thinking of the Subspace Rebound Transition transporters from ‘The High ground’ (I think that is the episodes name. The one with the terrorists that kidnapped Crusher). Miniaturization.
Again, we really don’t know much about the power and spec requirements for a transporter. For all we know, the transporter Lore used in ‘brothers’ was built into him, or it was a ‘press here to beam back to ship’ button. Same with Lursa and Betor’s escape transporter in Redemption. Come to think of it, didn’t Wesley Crusher’s little practice shuttle have an escape transporter (the one where he and his cadet-buddies where in an accident they decided to try and cover up)
Feasiblity/White Flags: Unless the power – requirements are comparable too, less then, or the same as a normal shield system, I agree. But when I run a military, surrender is not an option. I don’t white flag until I don’t think I can win. Then I order an all out suicide attack and quietly change my name and appearance and move to the bahama’s on tons of stolen money. Either that, or contact the enemy and find out how much they’ll pay me while I have my stuff sent to the bahama’s….
Stormtrooper waves: If I took a few with me, I’m happy. Personally, if I could, I’d just fill the corridors with warp drive coolant and some kind of gas or liquid that would break down stormtrooper armor, but that would be cruel. Trying to stay within what Starfleet might consider humanitarian.
‘Impressed’: That was for the moderators and to explain to people why I haven’t posted it to prevent the ‘where’s your proof/concept’ info. I’ve seen people get jumped on for that over ideas and concepts.
Rebuttal to your ‘alternate universe vs Magic Reverse Engineer of a Replicator’: The Empire has them already dumb-ass. They are called Imperial Duplicators and World Devastators. Build a big-ass World Devastator and watch the mayhem ensue. Why reverse engineer a technology they have a better version of.
Joe Mamma:
I agree, lots of techy problems and more feasible means. However, this is Starfleet. Since when do they do feasible?
Too Harsh: I’m sadistic to the level of Tarkin. You won’t co-operate with me? Fine. Commander, drop 100 Claymore mines, 40 pounds of C-4, 20 of claymore mines, into a shopping mall, and make my guest watch the resulting pain and suffering. If they still don’t co-operate, get ready to drop them into schools.
Capture: The transporter buffer PROBABLY has limited capacity for that. You might get a few. I just want them dead.
I also figure there gonna kill me anyway, so I might as well take a few with me. At least the Light-Turbolaser is quicker then an interagation droid. Something about being tortured to death by someone using a motherly sounding voice is a little un-nerving. I wish I had thought of that first actually…
Striderteen:
Since when does the Empire need a reason to build Superweapons?
I’m also thinking more of a transporter ‘force field’ (visually only). Normal force-fields, the empire probably knows how to deal with. I’m hoping a transporter weapon that looks like a Force-field would catch them off guard a few times.
As for conventional weapon. Show me a Federation starship with good anti-intruder defenses, and I’ll show you one that isn’t canon. It will be the same ship.
To All
Okay, let me change the term slightly. Crew ‘weapon’ or ‘defense’. More like ‘trap’. Go near it, it transports off part of you, or out part of you. I.e your head, heart. Or beams a grenade into your stomach on a 1 second delay fuse…. Sure, that would only slow stormtroopers down, but still, your are taking a few with you.
Or better yet
In the same novel, they had a problem with Klingons and another violent race trying to kill each other on the ship. They solved the problems by using the internal sensors to locate them all, and then beam all of the Klingons and the Kreel (the other race), (but Worf id’s by his com badge) onto a transporter bad. Since the Klingons and Kreel lacked weapons, and where now surrounded by Worf and a lot of security officers with phasers….
Why not take it one step further and just beam stormtroopers, minus weapons, into space beside the ship.
They could even defend against the ‘attrocities charge’ with: What, they are wearing sealed armor without build in lifesupport in case of loss of atmosphere? Opps.

I obtained a list of *all* the Star Trek material ever published. As in all the guy knows about. Considering it was in chronological book order by publication, and it's size, if there is anything missing, I'd admit to it.
Anyway....

The first thing we would need to do is get Star Dates for all those books, and put them into IN-UNIVERSE chronological order.
After that, summaries
After that, toss out ones that there is no way to reconcil with continuality, or that are too far fetched (i.e Enterprise-A cracking planets like the Death Star, Photon Torpedoes blowing up 500 kilometer asteroids, and Warp drive lets you cross the galaxy in seconds)
Then we start digging out the useful information to build this 'alternate Star Trek'. (i.e new aliens, new -within-star-trek-capaiblities- technology, new uses for technology, new ships, etc)
At the very least, could be useful for making cross-over-fan-fics more interesting.
I obtained a list of *all* the Star Trek material ever published. As in all the guy knows about. Considering it was in chronological book order by publication, and it's size, if there is anything missing, I'd admit to it.
Anyway....
Here is the list of material I have in mind for this project.
Be warned, there are over 490 items to this list. Most of them novels.

Well it just so happens I have one availiable... and it just might stand a bit more of a chance than the canon one . Vs. debates would be a whole lot more interesting as firepower, while victory still going to the Wars side, is at least in spitting range of the GE.In fact, I'd suggest you do that first and try to build a coherent alternate ST universe and then apply it to any versus debates.
Of course, it's not like Palpy wouldn't just manufacture such 'atrocities' on a whim either, weather or not the Fedies actually engage in them. Propaganda has its place, and I'm sure the GE can spin things better than most.and accounts of Federation "atrocities" would give the Emperor's forces a good way to justify the construction and deployment of more superweapons.

Solauren who the fuck are you to even talk to me, you're an idiot. I told you so, and all you can do is take a cheesy ass "holier tha thou" route along with a lot of wordy bullshit.
I can see why Wong doesnt want to put up with you either.

This has no place in the SWvST forum, for the obvious reason that it introduces non-continuity junk. It's so bad that he admits up-front that he doesn't even know how much of it can even be reconciled into a continuous timeline at all. Never mind the fact that we might as well just start introducing fanfics as evidence if we want to follow this route.
If you just want to discuss ST novels, do it in the PST forum. In the meantime, there's no point for this thread to continue in this forum.
