September? They should do it sooner, but even then it's a shorter deployment then the soldiers in Korea face. Course there not in action. I dislike the idea of sending a brigade of the 82 since it will probably make it impossible to keep up the normal alert rotation of the unit. But then exempting 10% of the army from Iraq probably wouldn't work.

CNN said "August and September," so I assume that they'll start rotating out sometime in August and finish pulling out the last elements sometime in September. Could be worse considering the overall situation; and we'll have to use National Guard units at various points. (Which brings up an interesting question on Homeland Security requirements--perhaps a programme of encouraging State Guard buildups should be seriously implemented?)

I'd favor simply expanding the active duty army, say by replacing the five brigades being converted to Strykers with new units.

Does that Reuters article imply that an SBCT will be deployed to Iraq in October, or that it'll just be 'deployed'?

The Stryker Brigade, which has undergone field trials but has not seen action, is due to deploy to Iraq in October, replacing the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Keane said.
