Probably McCarthy, who severely overextended by naming George C. Marshall as a communist, which was ludicrous.

I would tend to agree with that assesment, Him and Nixon proved that pissing off the media is fatal to any politician...

On the other hand Ford's "Three stoogies" era of the presidency kinda hurt our stature. The only reason he didn't die in office, is that Drugged out hippies, make really bad assassins... (Adding even more to the "Keystone Kops" level of notority for that era...

Dubya, going from my own experience- though I don't know what 'shooting his own cause in the foot' means, I just looked down my nose at the Republicans ever since Dubya was in charge. Before that, Clinton caught my ire, and I had a favorable opinion in terms of both Bush 41 and Ronald Reagan, at least for not being cockups and the controversial things they did happening before I gave a toss.

To me, it's a tie between McCarthy and Nixon. McCarthy made the mistake of assuming all socialists of being anti-democratic, not just the old-school communists. However, being in company with Nixon is just as embarrasing... because he was, well, Nixon.

Racing to label Dubya is rather short-sighted. History's verdict is not in on him yet, despite appearances to the contrary.

Richard Nixon was actually a pretty moderate Republican, hardly your traditional conservative ("we're all Keynesians now"), so I would say McCarthy. He gave communists the worst thing a conservative could ever possibly give them: martyrdom.

I believe things could well get worse for him. But we'll have to wait and see.

It takes a long time for history to judge people. Though I notice that Bill Clinton is never really given that benefit.

I'd say McCarthy. Goldwater was pretty extreme, but it didn't do any lasting damage to the Republicans. I'll put Hoover second, though I'd blame the Stock Market Crash more than I'd blame him.

Hoover almost joined the Dems (he was a progressive who was courted by both parties). History would have indeed taken an interesting turn had he done do...

Interesting to see that like the Nixon Kennedy Debates the voting does not reflect the outcome of the debates.

Hoover hurt the conservatives so much that Democrats won the next five consecutive terms.
Don't hate; appreciate!

A lot of people just seem to be putting GWB without actually posting why.

I think that in the long run, GWB has more potential to do damage than any of the above - if he'd failed any MORE drastically in the runup to the invasion, he'd have had Germany, France, Russia and China declaring war on us. His foreign policy is a godawful mess and his domestic policy is nearly nonexistent. America simply does not need a man like that in the White House.

FDR was reelected twice before the US entered the war (1936 and 1940), and Truman once after the war was over (1948), though.
