at sea, supporting first Operation Enduring Freedom and then
Operation Iraqi Freedom.

That puts it about 2004, as the date we strike back at our enemies again.

So who do we whack next year?

Iran? Syria, Saudi Arabia, or North Korea?

The people in Iran are ready to overthrow the mullahs without anyone's help. Syria isn't worth the bother. The Saudis will do exactly what we damn well tell them to do, especially now since we have Iraq and we don't need their oil or their military bases. Push North Korea too hard and Seoul goes *poof*. But Colombia's got everything we need. Marxists insurgents funded by coke money (if we legalized cocaine, of course, the coca farmers could sell to GlaxxoSmith-Kline and Pfizer instead of Carlos the Kingpin, but never mind), kidnapped westerners, and a government in Bogata that's screaming for help. It'll be like Clear and Present Danger, except it will be a total clusterfuck that won't accomplish anything.

Aside from humanitarian reasons there is no need to waste troops and resources in an useless backward place like Liberia. It does not serve the US interest.

North Korea should be the next US target. They are an oppressive marxist regime ready to be overthrow. If the US can act quickly and with overwhelming force they can destroy the threat of North Koreas nuclear weapons before they are fully operational. Of course by now it may be too late. The time wasted in diplomacy may have allowed North Korea to construct a small number of nuclear warheads. Still it is better late than never. North Korea must be stopped before they hold Asia and rest of the world hostage.

No, we mustn't attack North Korea. Not while there's the possibility that it can be solved diplomatically and/or the DPRK will simply crumble completely from within. Seoul is too great a price to pay, both morally and from the perspective of the best interests of the United States.

Preemptive nuclear attack followed by a strong thrust across the border would do it. We could be sure then we'd get his arsenal on the ground and take out the artillery targeting Seoul. The main problem would fallout drifting south across the border.

I'm trying to be patient here because I'm not much for the "you fucking idiot" school of debating, but North Korea ALREADY HAS nuclear weapons. We invade=Seoul destroyed. Also, perhaps you missed this part of history class, but the last time we invaded North Korea and attempted to destroy the Communist regime there, 500,000 Chinese "volunteers" poured across the Yalu River. I've argued repeatedly that Beijing would not interfere with a counterattack against North Korea if they tried to push across the DMZ, but if we strike first, all bets are off (and do remember that prior to 1991, the USSR also would have disapproved of a preemptive invasion of the North).

They'd like to be rid of their Korean albatross, but not at the cost of millions of refugees crossing into Manchuria, and I doubt they'd be thrilled with American military operations of any kind on the Korean Peninsula.

I'm assuming you mean, by the way, that they'd help us if we attacked first. If the north tried to invade the south and we assisted the southern counterattack, they might indeed send troops to stake a claim to the reconstruction process. Or at least shoot anyone who tries to get across the Yalu.

To be the doubting Thomas, remember what they say about the devil you know. The only feasible answer to NK, militarily, is a first strike with nukes on their artillery pointed at SK. But the losses from fallout would be far too great.

Why bother? Castro's old and the people hate him. Trying to kill him now would just piss off the people we're trying to save. It'd make more sense to lift the embargos so we can send Castro more cigars and have him die of lung cancer or something.
