Just heard on the radio that Bob Hope died. I hope it isn't true...

'thanks for the memories' Bob.
And thank you for brightening the days of the men and women thrown into shrapnel laden hellholes from Normandy to Chosen to Danang to Kuwait City. You will be missed.

So the real question is, whose impending demise will alt.religion.kibology joke about, now that Bob Hope is gone?

I'm in shock. I'd thought the old guy'd live forever.

Okay, everybody all together now...

Great American entertainer, especially well known for doing shows overseas in combat zones for troops. The USN named a class after him.

Yeah.. he's been around forever entertaining us on the silver screen and our boys when they're off in some godforsaken war in some godforsaken land.

He was a national treasure and will be missed.

Men like Sir Leslie Townes Hope are sadly uncommon. He will be missed by all those who have known joy and laughter through him.

Fortunately, men like him live on after death, in the memories of those very same people. People die; legends are immortal.

The man was truly incredible. To think that he was doing comedy routines for the soldiers in World War Two all the way to his final overseas tour in the 1991 Gulf War.

For those who don't know, Bob Hope was born in 1903 and became a comedian, getting his start in Depression-era Vaudeville IIRC. By the 1940's he was a well-known movie actor in comedy and started doing overseas entertainment shows for soldiers overseas. The guy went everywhere-- no hellhole, shellhole or foxhole was too far way or too hard for him to reach.

He brought a little bit of home to all the tired, weary GIs that were "over there". I'm sure a lot of Commonwealth troops were entratained by him as well.

He starred in a lot of comedy movies with titles like "The Road to Zanzibar" with other comedians, setting the standard for the comedy "buddy flick" that has influenced later shows like "Spies Like Us" (in which he had a cameo appearance), "Bill and Ted" and so on.

His Hollywood work is legendary but it is truly his selfless work for the troops overseas that made him the respected man he was. Literally three generations of soldiers can recall Bob Hope giving them a link to home and a little reminder of the good things in life that made their sacrifices and suffering worthwhile. I regret never having seen any of his shows except on TV.

He will be missed.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
