We had flies in here a few weeks ago, but then the cats got their shit in gear and now we just have random fly parts.

If you're skilled enough, you can hit a fly out of midair with a flyswatter hard enough that the acceleration kills them.

And you feel like you could take on the world after you do that.

If flys get really high and out of reach (if you've got a really high room or something), you can actually use a vacuum cleaner to suck them out of the air. I did that once with this big long wide hollow clear tube, around the end of the vacuum hose. It was great, you'd swing the end of the tube close enough, then the fly would start bouncing down the tube.

Great times.

The water in a bag trick works because the flies apparently have just good enough eyesight to be able to see the movement of the water, which scares them off...

I've seen some mosquitos, but never had a big problem with them. I just spray a bunch of Off bug repellant and hope they leave me alone. Do mosquitos and flies do anything good for nature, anyway?

I usually grab all the flies I can and slam them against some surface like a table. Never leave a fly alive, because if it escapes it'll tell all its little buddies where the party is. The fastest flies take a bit to capture tho, usually three or four tries and it involves a lot of guessing, or precog if you have it.

DDT killed most every fly that it encountered when it was first developed, after a few years it was barely 2/3 effective. With flies and their short generations they are able to quickly adapt to poisons or viruses anyway. Not to mention how dangerous that could potentially be for the human race.

The best way to take care of flies is to put dog shit in the yard, fly paper all around the house, and keep your garbage and leftover food put away or tossed outside.

Also, you should look into bug bombs, which might potentially help, take off for a day trip or a weekend and nuke the place with poisons and when you come back, ohhh yeah. This is the strategy our family has developed for roaches.

Ever since my junket to Kuwait years ago (and likely again in the future), I've had more than my fill of flies. You would think that since the desert is so dry, flies would not be so innumerable, but they are. The floor of my track was so littered with dead flies that is was black with their guts, and one was guaranteed to eat one to five of the critters a day while attempting to eat MRE's or "A"s.

Did I mention that I hate flies?
Indeed, our forces in the western desert had a similar problem with airborne perstilance and flies the shot the former and lived with the latter.

Tell me about it, during the 3 year my family lived in Kuwait we saw an unbelievable number of flies. On some days the screens on our windows would literally be clogged with hundreds of them, and I could not leave the house without letting a bunch of them in. The buggers would be all over our screen door and as soon as it was opened they'd go buzzing everywhere and a bunch would invariably end up inside our house. Good thing we had 5 family members to help swat the flying critters.

Wow. Thankfully San Franciscan weather doesn't seem to breed flies so well.

Flies help with decomposition of waste, but I have no clue what mosquitoes do, aside from provide food for bats, spiders, and other insectivores.
