Okay, my sister wants to know something for a friend of hers: what's the best brand of vodka widely available in America that's not too expensive? She's heard suggestions of Skyy and Grey Goose.

Well, any of you drunken louts have anythign to add??

Yep. Grey Goose'll do nicely.

The ex once told me it was the best vodka available anyway.

Just stay away from skyy tastes like rubbing alcohol. As for inexpensive and decent i would go with smirinoff.

Finlandia and Stolichnaya are my favourites, Ketel One is also good. I don't know how commonly they are available in the U.S.

Skyy and Grey Goose.. yep. You can also try Smirnoff, and some people prefer Gordon's (per grain vodka). Depends on what kind you want. [shrugs]

Finlandia and Stolichnaya are among the very best, and Finlandia at least shouldn't be hard to find. Viru Valge if you can get it, that's anoher excellent one.

Take an old Russian washing machine, toss in a few ounces of yeast, a 22-pound sack of sugar, a gallon of fresh milk and 10 gallons of water, churn the brew for two hours and distill.

That's because Absolut is pretty common.

Grey Goose is a good one(and I can't remember if it's potato or not.)

Though that's another factor does she want grain or potato, it makes a bit of difference in taste and feel.

Stolichnya is my favorite, though a bit pricey. Smirnoff isn't bad and a bit cheaper. Thing is, to get a good vodka, you have to spend a little money.

Damn right! Absolut is, well, let's just say that here it is a drink of absolutely last resort in most cases. There are so many better vodkas.

If you find them, some Central European vodkas (not sold as vodkas, they go by the name of Brännwein or something like that, but they've got just as much kick) are very good. Dangerous for the uninitiated too, because they're so smooth they make vodkas like Finlandia and Stolichnaya seem like second rate homebrew in some ways. Great for schnapps, but better be real careful if you mix them with Coke or other soft drinks, because the taste disappears into the soda while the kick remains. It's very easy to get rip-roaring drunk that way, without even noticing until it's too late.
