Ahh, the good old days of the Evil Empire...

I think everyone knows the story about the USSR diplomats being
kidnapped in Lebanon by the Hezbollah...Ive just heard a new
retelling of that story:
Not quite. The Russians sent in a 4 man Spetznaz "wet" team. The team was told that there were no rules, just get their people back.

Intelligence sources say the team went on a rampage through Beirut that had even the feared Hezbollah trembling in fear.

They reportedly kidnapped family members of the people holding the Russians, and started sending them pieces of their relatives along with suggestions that they might want to return the kidnapped Russians.

The Russians were quickly released, and the Russians have had no problems since.

The Spetznaz had developed a number of "people skills" in Afghanistan, and used them to effect in Beirut. One of the more popular techniques was asking people questions while hammering nails into their children's skulls with a gun butt.

Even the hardened Arab fanatics weren't prepared for this kind of brutality.

And the USSR is regarded as being the bastion of freedom in the world by all credible historians...... no, wait a minute....

I am constantly amused by this line of thinking "People call the US bad for certain actions but compare us to these empires that everyone recognises as evil and we don't look so bad", do you think people should get anyway with murder because compared to Dahmer they look good?

I would also point out that the USSR wasn't warmongering in this instance just being brutal.

This sounds like a classic Spetsnaz myth (in the 1980s there was practically spetsnaz fever in the West), but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. Of course, the West didn't even know how to spot 'a spetsnaz', nor did they know what exactly a spetsnaz was, considering that there were, and are, many such special forces troops in the former Soviet order of battle- from the GRU Army Spetsnaz (i.e. the 'true' roughly equivalent with the US special forces troops) to special purpose teams like Alfa and Vympel(hehehe).

Hell, they couldn't even recognize them- one popular myth was that if you saw a paratrooper (i.e. with the blue/white striped shirt showing- see my avatar) who wasn't sporting a Guards badge, you were looking at a spetsnaz. Not so. There were VDV units that weren't assigned the honorific Guards title.

Did Yeltsin and Putin keep these guys on retainer? What happened to them?

Most of the various branches are still around but at greatly reduced strength, the number of ex Spetsnaz personal on the free market is well into the tens of thousands.

Anyway I've heard this story many times before, mostly with minor variations on what part get mailed in first.

Remember the other way the Spetsnaz spent the 80's (in the press at least) - driving around the Baltic seabed in tracked submersibles? :)
