I haven't noticed any cliques, but I'm antisocial in any case, so that means little.
Don't hate; appreciate!

HAB and the Gnomes I notice.

BMs don't seem to gather unless there's a TGOD or Gnome-bashing (which turns into a TGOD soon enough anyway).

But the Gnomes will tend to respond to one another a bit; I know I usually find myself responding to DGG and Mitth's stuff. Probably because it's usually slightly crazy, or it seems tailor-made to us. *shrug*

It may just be because I'm not in one, but I don't find SDN really all that cliqueish. There are obviously going to be groups of people that get along better than others, enjoy the same things as others, etc., but everyone communicates with each other rather than organizing into tiny little bands.

I've never really noticed a clique but most of the ASVS people tend to stick together and have thier inside jokes. Everyone else tends to be loose change in a way.

Sure, we have little groups, but I think what he's getting at is that the popular view of cliques is that they're exclusive; they tend to exclude/ignore others not with them, and that doesn't seem to happen here. We have little groups and stuff, but it's not like we go out of our way to exclude others and only interact within our little "sphere" of posters.

I guess thats the point being made here, as much as some people may complain about private user groups, etc we are a very open community that interacts with each other and usually does not just limit themselves to a small group of posters. I find that refreshing and healthy, part of the wonderful charm of this place.

There are cliques of people that hang around each other. But nothing is completely clique as in excluding others. Loyalties change a lot in this place and the guy who was agreeing with you in one thread can be screaming at you in another.

Indeed. We have had *gasp* BMs and Gnomes actually agree! Perhaps most shocking, we even allied in a TGOD a couple times (Cyran, IIRC, before AD took up the BM mantle and was being with Durandal only, and again with Janeway Porn and the Coalition of the Slightly Sane)!

Now, if BMs and Gnomes can get along, there may be hope for HAB and Mecha Maniacs...someday.

I'm not disputing it. Heck, I'm saying that if BMs and Gnomes have been known to agree and even work together, there clearly aren't too many "true" cliques in SD.Net and there is hope for the future.

And if the HAB and MM ever start hugging and being ultra friendly and actually conceed that both tanks and mechs are useful, well...Peace in the Middle East just might happen. :P

Honestly, there seems to be groups of people who 'hang out' per say. I don't know if they would be considered a clique, but they are defenately a group.

Intelectuals (my label)- this board has quite a few really, really smart people who do not hesitate to delve into problems or debates with massive information and explanations.

Writters and Authors (again, my label)- Quite a few of the fanfic authors have done joint projects and have developed close relationships.

Military nuts (yes, again, my label)- A couple of private usergroups are dedicated to these guys. Some with real life experience and others with massive knowledge of military gear and stategies.

Kelly and Zaia worshipers (you know its true)- self explanitory.

Now, there is nothing wrong with any of these things, but I have notice that certain groups of people travel in the same direction with each other. I would count myself in a couple few of the groups so obviously I don't think being in one has a negitive conotation.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Gnomes and Black Mages do not get along...it's just that there are rare occasions where we agree on simple things. DGG and I have agreed on things before this...but nothing has ever changed.

That is the type of relationship the BM's and Gnomes have. Perfectly put..thanks both of you for giving everyone an example.
