Ok, well, I just never get to say that (because I'm usually the guilty party

Besides, it seems like one of those topics that should get it's own thread, all things considered.

Cliques exist, I suppose, but I think by my personality I instinctively avoid them somehow. I might join groups, but I usually find myself looking in. I might participate, but not to the point of where I find myself as like a core member of any particular group. I've also found that actively trying to become a core member of a group is counter-productive. You might see how a group of friends interact and say to yourself, "man, I want a part of that," and then proceed to try and impress everyone, usually overdoing it in the process, or coming off as just a little too eager to please. So I've long since given up on such behavior (though occasionally the urge strikes again before I have to crush it beneath my foot) and just been as honest as I can here and elsewhere online. Usually, if I can't contribute to a thread or I don't feel a need to make my voice heard, I don't post.
The classifications here are loose at best for the most part. People in general, and especially people who post here tend to have a great many things that they are interested in, and those interests can vary over time, maybe even in cycles. How people behave here can change over time...one month I might be zen-like, open, and accepting, the next I might be generally pissed off, aggressive, and twitchy on the posting finger, and the next I might be generally depressed and apathetic.
But we're in a social arena, albeit a relatively new and interesting one. There are people here who are more like us than people we might know locally. People who can challenge our intellects, people who can keep up in a discussion, or share a similar mindset, or share different ones that break your preconceptions. By creating loose associations like this, we may realize that some people are not so bad after all, or are more interesting than you previously thought.
One day, I suppose I'll continue with this line of thought, maybe in another post, but for now I'll cut things short, lest I ramble too long and get too far off track.

I've definitely noticed cliques, but not in a negative way. It's not as if everyone is hanging out with in some closed group and all the groups are watching each other and setting up rivalries or anything. It's more that people with similar interests and/or outlooks tend to gravitate together.
You can easily see this in the News and Politics forum where the cliques are perhaps the strongest ones here in some ways. On any given day, you can usually see the smoldering wreckage of yesterday's debates and the current battles in progress, but despite that and the insults that tend to fly rather thickly, there is usually no rancor outside N&P and we do get happily along with each other for the most part.
In general SDnet tends to be very open and tolerant, and it isn't in my opinion a very conducive environment for the formation of "real" (i.e. divisive) cliques.
The Mess, GALE Force and SoS/NBA are special cases, because their membership criteria are very specific and in each group everyone shares a single common element with everyone else. Of course, that doesn't prevent members of said groups disagreeing violently with each other over some other issues and belonging to "opposing" cliques elsewhere (e.g. me and Perinquus are both members of the Mess, and he seemingly belongs to the VRWC while I'm in the Liberal clique in N&P).
I don't see that there are any cliques with real negative influence around here, just common interest groups that are quite ready to mix and mingle according to individual tastes.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red
