Feel free to post. We just have a lot of, ahem, loose-cannon members who like to jump on any newbies that wander by. Think of a vigilante posse, but replace the vigilantes with Stooges and you might get the idea.

Previous to now this quote has only escaped my mouth at the Victoria's Secret Semi-Annual sale when I've already picked up ten pairs of underpants...

Well, okay, maybe *one* more...

I can take a good amount of good-natured newbie harrasment. The situation here, though, is that through the wonders of my website linking statistics, I found a really entertaining forum that looked so fun that I thought I would spend the evening introducing myself and catching up on all of the new threads and people I found here, despite the fact that I had loads of work to do on my website (I figured I would stay up extra late and get it done). Well, at first it was fun... I read a number of interesting threads and popped back into my own introductory thread every once in a while to respond to comments or questions. At some point, though, there was mention of spamming, then trolling, and then the warning that I would be watched. And then the thread was locked! All of this happened in a very short amount of time, and it just wasn't as fun as I thought it would be.

I'm not saying this isn't the kind of forum I would enjoy participating in at some point, but I am saying that I'm way more inclined now to read than post. It probably has it's fun moments, but tonight wasn't as fun as I thought it would be, and it certainly wasn't fun enough to warrant the time I was taking off from work that should really be my top priority at the moment, so I'm going back to work.

I'm going to keep reading, because there is a lot of interesting and entertaining information here... I'm just going to compromise my work vs. play time by only reading and not posting, since the first was so much more enjoyable than the second.

I thought a clarification was in order, so you wouldn't feel bad about 'running me off'... I just have to prioritize my time since my schedule is so tight right now.

Even if she wasn't "run off", the point remains that her experience here was negatively impacted by all of this pointless *POKE* shit, which made her entire thread into a spamfest that went nowhere and had to eventually be locked.

Next time a newbie comes along, here's a fucking original idea: if they want to start an introduction thread, try TALKING to them instead of this *POKE* bullshit!!

I'll probably still poke occasionally, but limit it to fresh newbies. No poking people with over 20 posts.

Dear Miss Grim,

I wish to express my sincerest apologise for the treatment that you recieved. Please understand that this board has been through some real doosies in the past and we tend to be a suspicious bunch. I saw how quickly you logged on after approval, so I know that you were at one point very keen and interested in this site.

I have had a chance to, shall we say peek? At your interseting site, and I wish to assure you that you would feel very much at home among as mis-creants. It is my hope that after a short break you will find the necessary time to spend with us.

Anyway, I don't wish to turn a moment in time, into an overblown drama. This poking nonsense had been allowed to run for far too long. Welcome to StarDestroyer.net and enjoy your stay.

Before people decide to ostracize me and universally bash me for this, let me explain what happened.

First of all, Miss Grim, no one was telling you that you were spamming or that you'd be watching. That was directed at the people who were doing the newbie poking thing, which is regarded as spam not you. The thread was locked because it dissolved into a giant pokefest.

Now, I'm probably digging my own grave here, I think I'd better clarify the "smelling a troll" thing. Let's look at the situation with reference to our history, shall we? We've recently have had a lot of problems with trolls from a certain place called Troll Kingdom. While incidents have died down, every once in a while one tries to infiltrate the board and posing as normal posters while on their forums they have a good laugh. The last one was a poster named Acacia, who posed as a young woman complete with webcam porn, who I can only surmise came to the board to pose as a center-of-attention co-ed aged sex doll and thus make fools out of horny young men who fell for her act.

Now we have a person who's first post is to tell us that she's found our message board and she's taken time out of her busy schedule of photgraphing and editting pictures of naked models to tell us how wonderful we are; "we" being a web board that largely around talking about science fiction and occasionally getting into infantile fights over it, plus a cavalcade of general political, religious, and gaming discussion. Now, normally I'm a accepting sort of guy and tend to trust people when they say stuff, but that sounds a bit suspicious. Moreso, it sounds like the modus operandi of certain members of the Troll Kingdom, so against my better judgement, I sniffed a troll.

Now I fully and expect to be flamed the hell out of, so go ahead. I shouldn't have posted my suspicions so soon and it was a bit tactless of me besides. Blast away then.

I can understand why your mind jumped to that, Gil, because mine did as well. However, I was planning on keeping my mouth shut to see what happened, because although she sounded quite like Acacia (or someone like Acacia, I should say) with the naked pictures thing, there was a way to check out her story.

So...*shrugs* I don't really like that you said what you said, but I can understand where it came from, because I thought the same thing.

What's done is done guys. Lets not obsess over the issue. We have all apologised, and we have stated that there was a bad case of 'guilty by association' going on. I am sure that Miss Grim is smart enough to figure out that we are being sincere about our apology and Gil has pretty much outlined the thought behind the comment.

So let's all let it rest. K?

I think I missed something, but wasn't this thread also meant to address spamming as well? BTW I'm glad poking is being frowned upon actually. I've outgrown it, and am removing my poke thingies from my SDnet Posty Shit.txt file as I speak.

P.S. Thanks for the PM, Darth Wong. :D I appreciate it.

I can proudly state that I've never poked a newbie on this or any other bored, nor been poked on any board, nor found poking humorous, and I'm damn glad we've finally decided to put a stop to it.

All of the "POKE" idiocy was brought over from spacebattles, and is a completely juvenile custom which as I recall was even banned over there--something which makes us look rather ridiculous. It was never done on ASVS and there's No Good Reason to do it here, except, of course, to offend people; and if we're going to do that can we find a more substantial reason than spamming newbie threads with the word "POKE"?

I think the punishment for any more poking incidents should be exceptionally severe. I am pleased to say that I have never participated in any sort of thing like this on any board, ever, and the sooner it's stamped out, perhaps we can get some more constructive and interesting new posters who otherwise might be scared off.

Jesus Christ.. Of all the moronic things do do.. People, when we say no spam allowed, that vigilantism is forbidden, that the bandwagon effect is really stupid, we have a few valid reasons behind us. The mods don't want to rule with an iron fist (except, perhaps, Thrawn..) but we will when and if needed. Since we are mostly grownups here, I don't think it's necessary for it to happen.

Miss Grim, I wish to welcome you to the forum. Seriously, this first impression does not correspond to the normality here. I look forwards to talking with you again. :)
