This is fucking insane.....

Post by MKSheppard »

Just found this while perusing gun laws;
The Federal Energy Management Improvement Act of 1988 (P. L. 100-615) requires that all toys or firearm look- alikes have a blazed orange plug in the barrel, denoting that it is a non-lethal imitation.
Can someone please tell me what Energy management has to do
with toys?

Well it does kinda keep toy guns from being mistaken for real guns shep. There have been a number of deaths resulting from that...

Then why is it under "FEDERAL ENERGY MANAGEMENT?"

That's not his point. I agree it's probably a good idea to make toy guns readily distinguishable from real ones, but it had no business on an energy bill. A lot of shit--especially pork barrel shit--gets passed as amendments to bills that have nothing to do with what the amendment addresses. The way it usually works is, "I'll support your energy bill, but only if you tack on this ride about putting orange plastic plugs in toy gun barrels."

That reminds me, the Hawaiian government recently outlawed brandishing realistic-looking toy guns in public. Or maybe it was the city council. Anyway, it's illegal here.

Many toy guns are now complete covered in bright colors while still retaining a realistic shape and textures, its pretty stupid. Though black spray paint fixes em right up.

There should have been a clause in the constitution stating that no bill may contain legislation on more then one category.

But why would one do that... sure if you still play with toy guns... But why do little children really need uber realistic guns?

Heh, in my hometown some years ago there was a guy who tried to rob a bank using a toy gun. Needless to say, the buffoon was arrested.

(Keep in mind this was in Denmark)

Because crooks are stupid and that's the only market that might want such a thing. A better question is why don't more criminals run a file down their weapons barrel after committing a crime, thus making ballistic matching impossible?

It makes ballistic matching impossible, apparently. Did you read the post?

Running a file changes the groves that are ingrained on the bullet as it travals down the barrel

Actually, upon thinking about it, one would use a round file and fuck up the rifling throughout the barrel. Thats a good idea.

Would a friendly mod like to cobble this post onto the one above?

I think he was referring to the mechanics of it. I would assume it disrupts the grooves inside the barrel.

A half dozen or so passes with any decent file will tear the rifling to shreds, you don't need to destroy all of it. The gun will still be useabul but the bullets sure won't be matching. This is the kind of thing you could do in a car after a drive by before dumping it, if you have time its rather easier to destroy a weapon and make it impossible to even fire it for an attempt at ballistics testing.

However its not fool proof since they can still match the bullet type and gun model to something you might be on record as having brought. That alone can be potent evidence.

I'd sooner dump it in the ocean a few miles offshore, personally. The chances of it being found are astronomically low.

I'd run it through with a file first, though :D
