You know, a lot of people thought the 18th Amendment would never get passed. It was backed by a vocal (loud-mouthed) fundie minority.*shivers*

If it does get passed, then I say after it is repealed, then we should raise the number of states needed to pass an amendment from 38 to 53.

Seconded. If they pass such a ridiculous amendment we as a nation should not be allowed to alter our founding document until we've come to our senses.

Making gay marriages illegal, like antisodomy laws, exists solely to strike fear into the hearts of gay people through enforcement of those laws. Thats terrorism, whether its lawful or not. The only difference between that and something Osama bin Laden would organise is the scale, consequences, and legality in the country it takes place in, not the motivation and fact that its destroying peoples lives just to destroy their lives.

The modern fundies have been making their mark since the seventies, they have always been the minority, but garner an inordinate share of the media attention.
The Temperance Movement fundies are a direct analogy, in that their movement was never one of popularity, but attention whoring. They pushed a view of morality through lobbying to the point they got a fucking Amendment passed. I can only hope today's aren't as successful as the ones in the past.

No, these policies exist to cater to the Bible thumper demographic. If you'd like to explain to me from where you gather that George W. Bush is out to strike fear into the hearts of homosexuals rather than simply get reelected, please do so. The anti-sodomy laws are a moot point (and in any case I do not recall Dubya ever holding any clear position on them), and simply denying a legal privilege to a particular demographic is not terrorism in itself. Discriminatory? Fucking hell yeah. But not terrorism.

I was not aware that cocaine is being funneled into the White House to satiate Dubya's massive habit. Must be the VRWC at work again.

I never have and never will understand what the big deal is about gay marriges. If they want to get married, let them.

Please do not refer to me as a "lesbo"; I find it one of the most directly highly offensive terms possible, and it rather sticks out in a thread title.

No, it doesn't, it just prevents homosexual marriage, were it to be recognized in one state, from being recognized in another were a married couple from the first state to move to the other, were that other state to not have the relevant statutes legalizing it.

Just to clear everything for us non-GALE folks, why is "lesbo" super-derogatory?* I've heard the term uttered by one person in real life to my knowledge, and she was a lesbian herself. A little etymology here would be nice.

*Also, could I ask a favor and skip the part where someone invariably says "Well, why is <insert derogatory term here> offensive?" This isn't Jeopardy, and answering a question with a question doesn't actually provide any answers. Likewise "It just is." is almost as useless as answering a question with a question. Naturally, with such a strong emotional response there is a clearly defined reason why "lesbo" is hyper-offensive rather than short hand for "lesbian". After all, none of us are particularly PC here, are we?

It's the lesbian equivalent to "faggot."

It looks like it was just a short hand way of saying the word "lesbian" to me, and it doesn't explain the only time I've ever heard the term was from the lips of a lesbian herself. That isn't a really satisfying explaination, since it doesn't explain why it's offensive, just that it is.

It is and isn't. It just depends on who you're talking to and the context of it all. MOST lesbians prefer being called LESBIAN rather than LESBO, same as most gays prefer to be called GAY or HOMOSEXUAL as opposed to FAG. You just have to be really careful who you're talking to.

*stares blankly at verilon*

Goodie, so when are you going to explain why it is offensive in the first place? So far, you've spent two seperate posts saying that is, but without any explaination. I'm starting to think you don't actually know why it is offensive, just that it is and thus requiring you to jump down someone elses throat over it.

Besides, where is the "It is and isn't" part coming from. Before you said it's highly derogatory, but now you are going the "context sensitive" route? If it is highly offensive, how is it any less offensive from the lips of one person (IE, Amanda, the person I mentioned before) and but worthy of a good ole fashioned message board gang flame for someone else?
