The Prisoner

Post by Straha »

Two questions on this actually, does anyone else here know about the Prisoner, Much less seen the entire series 8) .

Secondly, in the first B5 episode with Bester(Chekov) does anyone else notice him doing the Prisoner salute??

The nods to The Prisoner in Babylon 5 are quite deliberate, as it was one of JMS' favourite series. In "The Corps Is Mother, The Corps Is Father", PsiCorps HQ displays signs through the corridors very similar to the morale/propaganda signs displayed throughout the Village (even rendered in the same Albertus typeface). Indeed, JMS wanted to cast Patrick McGoohan to play the part of Knight One in the episode "And A Sky Full Of Stars" (in which Sinclair is interrogated by two covert operatives attempting to discover why the Minbari surrendered at the Line and if Sinclair was a traitor) but McGoohan was unable to break away from the theatrical part he was doing at the time; hence the casting of British actor Christopher Neame in the role.

Who was your favorite Number 2?

And what order do you think the episodes should be in?

Ah, practically the best cult sci-fi series ever made. 8) I've been to
Portmeirion where it was filmed too, very nice (though not near Portugal, lol).

I take it someone else saw the marathon of all the eps last weekend on Sci-Fi channel? I'm going to get the whole series on the special edition DVD boxset someday dammit!

I always like the Number 2 who was a lot like Alan Rickman (fourth one I think). Plus, what about all the Prisoner easter eggs in The Simpsons let alone B5 (which has more in the series I forget though).

It's a pity Leo Mckern died in July, he was usually voted the best #2.

Number 2: What in fact has been created? An international community. A perfect blueprint for world order. When the sides facing each other suddenly realize that they're looking into a mirror, they'll see that this is the pattern for the future.
Number 6: The whole world as the Village?
Number 2: That is my dream. What's yours?
Number 6: To be the first man on the moon.

Number 6: I will not make any deals with you. I've resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own. I resign!

Number 6: Where am I?
Number 2: In the Village.
Number 6: What do you want?
Number 2: We want information.
Number 6: Whose side are you on?
Number 2: That would be telling, we want information, information information.
Number 6: You won't get it.
Number 2: By hook or by crook, we will.
Number 6: Who are you?
Number 2: The new Number 2.
Number 6: Who is Number 1?
Number 2: You are Number 6.
Number 6: I am not a number, I am a free man!

#6 - "I'll do better than that, I am going to escape and
come back."
#2 - "Come back?"
#6 - "Yes. Come back and wipe this place off the face of
the earth."

The whole Earth...as the Village

Lucky you.
I always like the Number 2 who was a lot like Alan Rickman (fourth one I think).
The fourth Number 2 appeared in the episode "A, B, & C" and was portrayed by Colin Gordin (who also is Number 2 in "The General"). But I believe I know who you're talking about; the Number 2 from the episode "Checkmate", actor Peter Wyngarde.
It's a pity Leo Mckern died in July, he was usually voted the best #2.
Yes, quite tragic. McKern was the best Number 2 of them all, I think, and a very strong character in the series. He's the one who comes the closest to winning Number 6 over and actually learns the secret of why he resigned —though it was so simple that his mind rejected it. I also liked McKern very much for his signature character of barrister Horace Rumpole.

The exchange from "Once Upon A Time" summarised the nature of their particular conflict so well:

You chose this method, because you knew that the only way to break me was to gain my respect.

That is correct.

And then I would confide?

I had hoped you would come to trust me.

This is a recognised method, used in psychoanalysis?

The patient must come to trust his doctor totally.

Sometimes...they change places?

It is essential in extreme cases.

Also a risk, if the doctor has problems of his own.

A grave risk.

And that is why the system is known as Degree Absolute.

It must be one or the other of us.

Why don't you resign?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha. You're good. You're very good!

Wonderful series. Just about the best television series ever made.

I have a friend who looks just like Wyngard. And you know he acts just like him to. Anyone else ever notice how horny he looks when they are programing the woman. I swear it's just like he was thinking "man why can't they do this for me?"
