Atheist and Chicks
Dealing with various atheist in on-line communities I've noticed that the vast majority of them are guys. Normally this would not be such a revelation as men tend to be more interested than women in the internet and computers in general. But after recently meeting an atheist group in the flesh, it seems that this demographic exist in the real world and not just in cyberspace. This makes me wonder, is my observation real or just a hasty generalization? And if indeed the atheist scales are tilted towards the Y chromosome; then why is this?
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

Perhaps men are more aggressive with their opinions. This would mean that if a man is an atheist, he's more likely to let you know about it.

And they say you have to get a degree to be a psychiatrist.
Well you're probably right, most of the atheists I know are girls.

Watching The Atheist Viewppoint I saw a statistic that women are more likely to have any sort of religious belief while men are more likely to be atheists... no clue why...

Re: Atheist and Chicks
Well, I identify myself as a "philosophical deist" (which I can explain in some depth and defend), but don't particularly hold harsh feelings to the church--occasionally I'll even say I'm a lapsed catholic. Despite this, I definitely had conservative catholic parents who could have used a reduction in their religious fervitude.Wicked Pilot wrote:Dealing with various atheist in on-line communities I've noticed that the vast majority of them are guys. One thing I think I've noticed is that a fair number of women become associated with neo-pagan movements--perhaps there is a skew there, with fewer men in the neo-pagan movements?
Could this be because of a cultural identification of the neo-pagan movements with the "goddess" ideal, while atheism is linked towards a sort of industrialism, rationalism, progress, etc, things which have been traditionally defined as "masculine"?
I don't necessarily approve of that, and think it is still defining ourselves in opposition to Christian ideas of masculinity and feminity, instead of creating concepts suitable for a world with reduced influence of religion; but it could well be how things are playing out for the time being, since religious concepts are still very much in transition.
This may also suggest that in countries like the U.S. there are more people who are in the general spectrum of atheism than polls indicate, but don't directly identify with atheism because they hold a non-traditional/philosophical belief instead.

I've heard before all that new-age paganism is becoming popular especially among women because it does not necessarily require the worship of masculine deities - and there might be something about such claims.

I´ve noticed this too. Almost every non-Christian girl I´ve met is a pagan of some sort and pretty much every non-Christian guy I´ve met is an atheist. Always wondered about that.

Anyways... I think this all goes back to our unfortunate societal problem with gender and identity. In short, our society is suffering from a shortage of strong women. Still. And most women are too lazy to step outside of their little box of a gender role. <grumbles>. Which makes it awfully hard for guys like me to find a date, but... that's a personal problem.
