Err... why? The Virginia has zero advantages over the Kirov, combat capability wise.Iceberg wrote:As far as nuclear-powered surface ships go, I'd rather have a Virginia-class CGN (updated with VLS) than a Kirov. Of course, getting your hands on a Virginia right now might be tough...
Btw- bellona.no are a bunch of rabid enviromentalist fundies who take the legit cause of raising awareness about all those obsolete hulk nuclear subs in the Northern and Pacific fleet and pervert it into screaming NUCLEAR... AHHH! Every chance they get. I'd also take their naval news with a relative grain of salt until you see it repeated elsewhere- they've often proclaimed the demise of several ship classes only to be proven wrong repeatedly.Col. I would really rather have one of these! Isn't shepretty?

As of the Presidency of the George H. W. Bush the policy of the US has been not to deploy nuclear weapons on surface ships.Trytostaydead wrote:
Well, carriers carry tactical nukes, don't they?
The official policy being: "I can not confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear weapons onboard fill in name of ship here but currently it is not the policy of the United States to deploy such weapons on surface ships".
Or something in those basic terms.
I will tell you that all of the WTs (weapons technicians -- ie: nuke weapons guys) on my last ship (USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72) had to convert to different ratings. Most either went Gunner's Mate or Information Specialist (because of their security clearance).

Heck, you might have a decent chance at capsizing a few ships just with your wake.Hasler wrote:you could ram the english navy
I'm surprised no one has come up with a way to rig the steam catapults on a carrier to launch some weapons. I'm sure that something used to help toss a 15 ton aircraft could be converted into some sort of useful weapon.
Just break out the Star Trek Gerryrig Engineers....

Id take the carrier since it's nuclear powered. You would not even need to strafe/bomb/missile the enemy fleets. You could just pull up along side and have sailors and marines throw molotov cocktails over the side!
Of course that does put them at risk, but think about it. I would think simple tracer rounds can light those ships sails or decks on fire. Just running them over or setting them on fire is all you need.
Save the aircraft for a massive strike on the industrial base in London.

Don't the newer tomahawks make use of gps during their flights?Arrow Mk84 wrote:Well, if you want to take over the world and you have nukes, it really doesn't matter which ship you take. A tomahawk can deliver the warhead as easily as an F/A-18. A few of those babies and Europe would collective shit itself.

What about modifying the phalanxs so that they can be manually aimed at ships?

Anything worth the cost of a missile, which can be located on the battlefield, will be shot at with missiles. If the US military is involved, then things, which are not worth the cost if a missile will also be shot at with missiles. -Sea Skimmer

I saw Pirates of the Caribbean today and I thought about how much difference some modern weapons would make in a ship to ship battle. Even a force of 4-5 Marines with modern weapons would be of immense value.
Can you imagine the shock when some fires an AT-4? Or rakes the opposing ship with fire from light machine guns?

"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. France would actually have a chance of ruling the world...Tosho wrote:I'd take the carrier, go to the nearest port, and wait there till 1799 when I'd offer the carrier to Napoleon. Something tells me that He'd be quite happy with the idea of me being the new head of the French military R&D.

No, nature abhores French rule.
