Siege Tank

Post by Wicked Pilot »

Here is another model of mine. As M used to say "This is the big one 007".

This thing is combination tank, siege vehicle, and command vehicle. It features a max crew of 10. It's offensive weapons are two huge main cannons and a missle bay with 8 warheads ready for launch and 8 more in storage. Defensive weapons include two twin cannon anti-air guns on the rear, and one twin gun anti-personal cannon on top of the turret. This thing also holds a squad of troops or cargo in it's rear compartment.

The model itself was built back in the summer of 1999, and was modeled into the computer on May 27th, 2002 after two days of work. The computer model peice count comes at 1159 peices, with the physical model probably with more due to ineffencies in construction.

Here it is in all it's glory:
Front View
Side View
Top View
Rear View

Here are two cutaway views:
Side Cut
Top Cut

As a bonus, to anyone who uses LDraw, here is the model for your amusement. I know *you* won't do it, but I must ask that you please not rip off my design.

Unfortunately, this model is due to the scrap heap soon. I have some new ideas of other vehicles I'd like to construct. At 1,200 peices, I can't afford to let this thing stay on the shelf any longer. I do have photos of this so I'll see about scanning and posting them sometime.

Well, unless they're Turbolasers.

Notice that turbolasers are in multiples of two or three, almost never single-mount?

BTW I like the concept: a polyvalent heavy tank that can kill very nearly anything else on the field. W00t!

It's not a tank, those be wheels on the side. The concept and armament is just awful, jack-of-all-trades, shitty at all of them and too valuable to be risked in action even if it avoided tipping over. Not bad for legos though.

I kinda disagree with you. Its not a tank, its a long-range artillery platform. Not perfect armament-wise, but functional enough.

Keep in mind that this is a siege vehicle. It is not meant to duke it out with enemy tanks. But if it gets its gun pointed at one, it can sure as hell blow it away.

I would say it is somewhat similiar to the artillery peices in AOTC.

I am, which is why I cannot understand why you would have a command post and infantry squad inside of every one. Multiple guns also make no sense; they never do for direct fire tasks, nd only rarely for SP artillery. One big shell is more effective against armor or heavy fortifications then two small ones. That's ignoring the major recoil and aiming issues.

Its also a case committing to much firepower and too many assets to one chassis, N squared favors the single gunned tank which is why things like the Soviet five turreted T-35 where quickly abandon.

But as I said, cool for it being legos. It just sucks for real life.

Yup. Four small ones clustered around a higher central turret. The main turret mounted a 3-inch gun and a machine gun, two of the smaller ones mounted a machine gun only and two others mounted a 47mm anti tank gun. It failed horribly in action. Earlier the Soviets also designed and built the three turreted T-28 and designed the twin turret T-100.

...and that's why we have the KV-1 instead of the T-35? :?:

Nice for a lego model though :) At least it seems nasty, aside from the flaws already pointed out.

I had a flurry of ideas and just combined them all into one. My newest model that I have constructed from this thing's peices is much more logical.

Your name looks familiar. Are you involved with XWA Opts by any chance?

Yup, the KV-1 was the next Soviet heavy tank project.

Luckily for Soviet tank crews the T-35 also had extremely short range. When the only unit to be equipped, total production was less then 100, went into action they all ran out of fuel before finding any Germans.

Yes - I was the XWA Upgrade Public Relations Officer. Don't do it anymore though, mostly because of lack of interest, and I was 12 or 13 at the time. I'm honoured to recongized, in fact, and I hope that doesn't come across as ass-kissing or anything. Oh! There was OPT Review.

I made it with real Legos about three years ago. I modeled it with LDraw last year. It has been sitting on my shelf since Saturday; when I finally tore it down to make something new.
