Did SD.Net kill ASVS?

I tried to get into ASVS. I really did. I even posted there once or twice.
But the fact of the matter is that a newsgroup is a vastly inferior format compared to a BBS. Not only is SD.net *far* more accessible, it's also more familiar, boasts a simpler interface, and has far more options, extras, and assorted paraphenalia than ASVS does(or could, given the restrictions of the newsgroup format).
Far more people will find SD.net than ASVS, and, given a choice, will almost always chose the one with the superior format.

I bopped around ASVS for about three months, made the top 10 in posts, then disappeared back into the depths of various things.
As to what ASVS is... I wouldnt' really know,. I haven't been there since May. When I was there, it did seem to be going down hill due to spam, and there weren't really all that many debates going. I think that yeah, it's on it's last legs, but it was fighting to stay alive.

A newsgroup most certainly is not inferior to a BBS. A newsreader is far, far faster and more efficient than a BBS server. Newsgroups cannot be hacked because their content is stored across many different servers, and they do not "go down" like a BBS can. Furthermore, your capabilities for reading a newsgroup are limited only by your client, and most popular Usenet clients have a vast wealth of features that a BBS does not have, like a kill-filter. It's also not possible to save a message as a draft on a BBS.HemlockGrey wrote:But the fact of the matter is that a newsgroup is a vastly inferior format compared to a BBS.
BBS servers, while more accessible, are hugely error-prone compared to a newsgroup. BBS servers introduce HTML rendering bugs, PHP errors and the like. Newsgroups communicate one thing: plain text. This makes them far more efficient for simple communication purposes. There are advantages and disadvantages to each, but Usenet is by no means inferior to a BBS.

One problem Durandel, all the news servers I joined were error riddled and I could not see ANY posts by certain people (such as Chris O'Farrell). The simplicity of a message board as well as the moderated and admin nature of it makes for a much better system for communication.

But most of these are technical triumphs, and what matters to the average person is simplicity and cosmetics.A newsgroup most certainly is not inferior to a BBS. Actually, I kinda like the Un-Modded/Un-Admined feel of a newsgroup sometimes. Until it gets ransacked by trolls, but there are ways to deal with this, I suppose.
But it makes it seem like the "Wild West" (to steal someone else's description) as opposed to someplace where you gotta follow the rules, or else.

I tried to get involved in ASVS as well, but was too inept to do so.HemlockGrey wrote:I tried to get into ASVS. I really did. I even posted there once or twice.

Howedar is no longer here. Need to talk to him? Talk to Pick.
The problem is that I have no access to a decent news server and google sucks.

I dont think so, we talked about a lot of stuff over there just as there is here. The difference is there are more people here with different veiwpoints etc.Lord Pounder wrote:The difference was over here at SD.Net we had more than Trek vs Wars to talk about.
