Black Church Offers Money to Lure Whites

As some of you may or may not know, the most segregated places in the United States are the churches. Now I am all for diversity and getting people together, but this is messed up.

Also of concern; with the President's new Faith Based Initiave, I'm wondering if federal money could be used in ways such as this.

Thoughts?

Bush's faith-based bullshit is a flagrant violation of the establishment clause. It's just a way for him to give His Lord In Need Of Cash the cash he so desperately needs. There is no reason to give money to religious organizations for helping people out. We have federal programs for that already, yet Bush wants to cut their funding and basically give it to his preacher-boy buddies.

Black gospel music is actually very good, if you ignore the lyrics and concentrate on the feeling--exceptionally powerful, very emotional, quite incredible in intensity. If the sermon was not long and it was mostly singing, it would really come down to driving time, which if it was about ten minutes each way or less I would probably attend for ten bucks.

If they pay you $10 do you still have to put 10% of that and your other income into the collection plate? If so, I would think the church is still coming out ahead.

I noticed that the article says $5 per hour on Sundays and $10 an hour on Thursdays. What I think a lot of people have presumed is that the services are only one hour. Most of the people I've known who went to "Black" church services went for several hours. I'm thinking like 2+ hours absolute minimum and 4-6 hours being more common. Granted, I would imagine the service would be a lot more interesting/entertaining than the boring stuff I grew up going to (America Baptist - Previously Norther Baptist).

Exactly what I do. Hell, I don't mind even singing the stuff myself in that context because I'm not listening to the english language, I'm listening to the musical language, and that speaks WORLDS more.

the whole thing seems kinda immoral. I aint much of a bible scholar but there has to be some reason why this makes baby jesus cry. Either way I couldn't accept the $10 wheather I attended or not.

also I find it funny that no one here can claim to enjoy gospal music without the "as long as you don't listen to the lyrics" amendment. like any vague association to christianity will give you the cooties or somthing.

Oh, some of the lyrics are very nice--they just don't hold any meaning to me. I was raised Catholic, you see.
