Olrik, a few people beat me to the punch but some jujitsu styles are excellent for self defence and for pounding on some guy who has bumped into you at your favourite bar! I'm trying a hybrid art that is Brazillian jujitsu, kickboxing and clinching. The instructors are kungfu and sambo masters respectively.

You know, if you're looking to kick ass then why not try some Israeli Krav Maga or Russian Sambo. Both are very effective!

They're exactly the same but completely different. And you can't spell fundamental without fun. To learn you must study and do. Train hard grasshopper! :D

That's a kata I've known for the last year and a half, BTW. It's called sanchin, and it's a traditional goju-ryu/shito-ryu kata. Virtually unknown, IIRC, in shorin-ryu and shotokan, though.

Goju-ryu, unknown?!? That's one of the more mainstream of the okinawan schools and that kata is done at my dojo for the karate students and there's is a mixed system of karate, taekwondo and jujitsu!

No, no, I'm saying that sanchin isn't common in shorin-ryu and shotokan because they're both hard styles (derived from shira-te), and sanchin is a "soft" kata (derived from naha-te).

Gotcha! Oooh, I didn't know that history behind Sanchin!

AFAIK a reason is because of the popularizing of TKD and tournaments, special forces trained with TKD still practice grab/jam techniques.
Some SF types may. but most western ones use something quite different
We learned six grab techniques and a couple throws in TKD, just between yellow and orange belts. I will admit the throws may have been bastardized, since the professor (wasn't the master, and it was a college course) was an aikidoka also, and the throws were very similar to those of Aikikai (may have been a style difference or a whole different throw, not sure). Of course, I don't know my master's history, other than that he moved from Korea. Any TKD people know any background on Sun Tok Choe?
