No, it's real. The reason for this is to prevent lawsuits tying up the oil money the U.S. is using to help pay for the reconstruction of Iraq. The national emergency stuff is retarded, though.

How does this destroy that argument?

Indeed, and the case of the Belgian lawyer and his Energy Weapons of Doom shows that the U.S. can't allow parasitic lawyers an avenue to make things more difficult for us.

Everything is a fucking national emergency or national security issue lately. The latest travesty is a bill intended to make MP3 sharing a national security issue. This is just par for the course in 21st century America; it's hard to believe that this is the country of Thomas Jefferson.

It's unfortunate but necessary. What we need to do now is rebuild Iraq as quickly as possible, and what we don't need is to be tied up in court while trying to do so. I do hope that this policy is changed later on, though.

Hope is a bit different from having it actually happen.

I personally would bet money that this policy will continue after the reconstruction.

It's unfortunate but necessary.
'This is unfortunate but necessary' is typically the preamble to a person or group of people losing his or their rights to enrich another person or group of people.

That's because the people in power (Democrat as well as Republican) in this country see "national security" as a way to steamroll principled objection to their immoral schemes.

It wasn't however, necessary in Afghanistan.

Just as politically unstable, but less rich in oil resources.

Afghanistan was not going to pay for its own reconstruction. Iraq's oil industry was going to pay for its reconstruction, a plan well known before the war began. If Afghanistan's poppy industry was going to be used to pay for its own reconstruction then there would be similar executive orders. Nothing sucks the money and resources faster than legal actions and liens.

There's no oil to protect in Afghanistan - nothing that can be used to help finance the rebuilding of the country. Why would it be necessary?

Not that there wasn't caterwauling about oil with regards to the Afghanistan campaign, though (remember the oil pipeline business?).

Maybe it could just be... Oh wow!... We don't want to pay for rebuilding two countries at once? But you wouldn't care; a tax-and-spend like yourself would just raise taxes to do it, and then watch as you send the country into debt because no tax revenue gets raised when doing so destroys the economy.

I still fail to understand why "tax-and-spend" is supposed to be an insult, given that it's typically used by people who advocate the government's current "borrow and spend" fiscal policy.

The current government policy is based on the demonstrated fact that lowering taxes improved the economy, resulting in long-term higher government revenues, despite the lower levels of taxation.
