When Star Wars (movie) Trivia goes horribly, horriby awry...

Post by CorSec »

No, it's not the next FOX Special. Sadly, this is a real life (well, as real as it gets for the net) event. I can't believe that I'm witness to some of the most inept answering in human history. Even more unbelievable is that I'm the cause of it all.

I guess it's easier to explain if I just walk you through it: On a message board (in another galaxy far, far away - or so it seems) I frequent, one on going thread concerns itself solely with Star Wars movies trivia questions. The format is, one person asks a question - members post answers and the first correct answer asks the next question, et cetera.

I asked the following three questions. The first one I considered somewhat difficult, mostly because I may not have phrased it right. I decided to end the slow and random guesses I was recieving by posting what I considered the answers and then asking the next question. When that was answered in the category of 'close, but no cigar,' I posted my third - and easiest question. The guesses have been nothing short of stupifying from my perspective.

But first, test your mettle against my l33t trivia powers, if you dare!

(At a future point, I'll regale you with the answers I recieved to these questions!)

First question:
Name the names Chewie's been called. I don't mean "Chewie" or "Chewbacca", I mean the other pet names or insulting, derogatory names he's been called.
Second question:
Which stormtrooper wasn't at his post?
Third question:
In Mos Eisley, an alien threatens Luke. He proudly boasts that he has the death mark on a number of systems. How many systems?

1. Fuzzball, Walking Carpet, Vicious Brute, "wookiee" (although that shouldn't really count). That the sort of answer you were looking for.

2. TK421

3. Twelve.

Didn't have to check with the movie for any of this... :D

Those are the types of names I was looking for. I do have to question some of them, though. I don't recall "furball, hairball or vicious brute" in any of the movies. (No, 'wookiee' doesn't count as it is a species name not a pet name.)

There is at least one more name I'm looking for.

Re: Question 2:

Correct, of course.

Re: Question 3:

SPOOFE has the answer.

Could the name "Thing" be what you're looking for? I think that's what the officer in the detention block called Chewbacca when Luke and Han brought him in.

Threepio calls Chewbacca "vicious brute" in TESB, when he's strapped to Chewie's back, if I recall correctly.

Keep in mind, however, that I haven't seen the movies in a while, as I've been waiting 'til the three prequels are done before going back and watching them again.

Wow, you guys are awesome, truly. While that wasn't the one I'm looking for, it was a name I considered and disregarded (at least for the other community). The other name I'm looking for is spoken not too long after the 'this... thing' comment.

Huzzah for SPOOFE! It was indeed, Big Furry Oaf.

An interesting, though extremely trivial piece of trivia contained within my questions is that I don't think Chewbacca was called any pet names in Return of the Jedi. But I could be wrong about that.

Up next! The answers from across the net.

Here's the transcirpt to the continuing saga of the unanswerable third question:
Halcyon wrote:Hoo, man. I am asking all the wrong questions.

I was looking for his designation. It was TK 421.

I'll ask another question, hopefully it'll be easier.

In Mos Eisley, an alien threatens Luke. He proudly boasts that he has the death mark on a number of systems. How many systems?
ARCANGEL wrote:I think its 21 or 23.
Halcyon wrote:Nope. It wasn't that many.
ARCANGEL wrote:13?
Halcyon wrote:You are SO close. But you're not correct, yet.
ARCANGEL wrote:Man how many answers do I have to try.

OK how about 17ish
Halcyon wrote:Nope, that's not it either. But keep on trying.

Halcyon wrote:I must be the trivia king as I've asked the most impossible questions - or something.

Here are your hints: It's actually in the dialogue in the movie. It happens right there in the beginning - well, before the first hour is up. It's a number between 4 and 13. (No, it is neither 4 nor 13.)
ShiniNik wrote:1 2 3 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12

ShiniNik wrote:Man, I was trying to speed things up here. <G>

Um...

<just realized it was supposed to be 4-13 and she put 1-13> <laughs>

8?
Halcyon wrote:No to Arc's claimed number and no to NikNak's number as well.

So, now we have 5,6 and 9-12 remaining.
MidnightyMikey wrote:5

I'm sure it was a single digit number...
ARCANGEL wrote: 11?
Halcyon wrote: Five is wrong and so is eleven.

I can neither confirm nor deny whether or not the number in question is or is not a single digit number, as doing so would leave no doubt as to which number it is. (And that is your final hint. Which is to say, read carefully.)

I wouldn't call them 'dumb'. Oh sure, I'm tempted to, but I wouldn't actually do it. My guess is that they don't have enough desire to do the minimal research it would take to find the answer to the question(s). Or, for whatever reason, they don't have the movie on hand to review - (non-existent) god forbid.

Wait a minute... y'all are calling these folks "dumb" because they didn't know some movie trivia? It's called "trivia" for a reason, folks!

But, how's this... how did Stanley Spadowski become a TV star? Anyone that doesn't know the answer should be given a Village Idiot label.

Han called Chewie either furball, hairball, or fuzzball in TESB, right after Leia kisses Luke (y'know, after the wampa and the bacta)

No no, it's dumb because based on the numbers he's eliminated and the other thing he said, you automatically know what the answer is.

That is, there's several single-digit numbers and one double-digit left...hence, if he says telling whether it's a single or a double would give it away, you know it has to be the double digit number.

Yeah, but I got the distinct impression that most of those people weren't reading the responses of the thread. So they weren't dumb... just lazy.

When was his number credited or mentioned?

(More specific to the trivia question in question, the only trooper AWOL to be identified is TK 421.)
SPOOFE wrote:Yeah, but I got the distinct impression that most of those people weren't reading the responses of the thread. So they weren't dumb... just lazy.
That's the least judgemental assessment. At worst we're lazy, at best we were simply inattentive to the details. (Though I remember the details simply through repetition.)
