Being at or near the Towers as they collapsed would easily do it. The sheer trauma of the experience would upset the health of the mother. Add in a lungful of concrete dust (which is nasty stuff in and of itself) and you probably will affect the babies.CHICAGO — Air pollution from the World Trade Center attacks may have resulted in smaller babies among pregnant women who were in or near the collapsing towers, preliminary research suggests.

I read about this in the paper today. The babies didn't seem to be seriously affected.
