The gay lisp...

Post by zombie84 »

This is something random that just popped into my head the other day...

why is it that homosexuals frequently have that stereotypical lisp? Is it genetic, does it come along with the gay gene in a persons DNA? If so, then why, in some cases, does it only become apparent until said homosexual comes out of the closet? This would then lead me to believe that it is a social thing--that it is a deliberate choice, perhaps in order to fit in with the accepted homosexual mold the gay community panders to, which strikes me as a very weird thing to do. Not all gays talk with a lisp--why is it that some do and some dont? It leads me back to the original question, which interestingly parallels the controversial question regarding the cause of homosexuality--is it deliberate or genetic? Homosexuality is determined by a persons DNA, so is the lisp too, or is it yet another dumb, pretentious mark that gay community for some reason tries to conform to? Maybe its just a recessive characteristic in a persons gene...

I think someone's been watching too much TV. None of the Gay people I know have a lisp.

That's weird. My cousin doesn't have a lisp, but apparently where he works, he goes for the total affectation. Lisp, noodle-wrist, flamboyancy, etc.

lisp != accent. I have a slight lisp due to overbite. I also have a slight British accent when I'm drunk.

I've met some heterosexuals who lisp, although none of them are close acquaintances.

All the gay men I know talk effeminately, listen to show tunes and Barbra Streisand, and the like. I know not all do that, but I don't know why all the ones I know do.

Maybe it's because I'm majoring in theatre and I'm just more likely to meet gays like that.

Hehe, the professor for my sound editing class has a lisp, and looks and acts sort of fruity. But he's not even gay and is married with a baby daughter. Everyone in the class thought he was gay untill he mentioned his wife and daughter.

San Francisco is only an hour away, so lisps are a plenty here. If they are pretty uncommon in other parts of the continent, then maybe its more of a "social" thing.

lisp? huh.

While I know many men who are, shall we say "Camp as Fuck Screaming Queens", nealry all of them have perfect diction. I have no I dea where the idea of a lisp came from, but I've never met a gay man who had one.

Yeah, the gay lisp doesn't really exist. We all made it up.

Not every gay man lisps, probably the majority doesn't. But I'd bet money that a MUCH larger % of gays lisp compared to straights.

"Lisps" are fairly rare, but I think you're confusing it with a style of speech that is campy/effeminate for men. I know many gays who speak like that. The conclusion I've come to is that it is an acquired speech pattern, and is becoming more rare as homosexuals get more acceptance from society. It probably was originally a "calling card," a way to easily identify yourself as gay so you could attract potential mates in a non-gay setting. It also was probably a self-imposed way of differentiating one's self just to be different, in a minor way of protesting the constraints of the heterosexual norm.

I certainly don't speak that way, and it more often than not is a turn off, though I try to keep an open mind. But seeing huge, muscled and tan Chelsea boys who speak in a queeny voice is surreal to the point of comedy. :)

I think it's just a stereotype.

Not that there aren't homosexual men who lisp.

BTW - what causes people to have "lispy" voices?? I've heard that a long tongue make it easier to lisp, but maybe that's just an urban legend.

There's a gay nurse where I work who doesn't really speak with a lisp but he speaks with a put on intonation and an accent most of the time. It fades in and out a lot but he can definately turn it off when he wants to be serious and get his point accross.

THE LISP EXISTS! If you don't believe in it just spend a year living next to Greenich Village, or for that matter anywhere in Manhattan except the upper east side and you'll be exposed to more lisp, then some people are in their lifetime. Probably has something to do with trying to fit into gay culture.

I happen to live in the village currently. A "lisp" is not common (meaning substitution of "th" for "s"). However, a gay "accent" as described above is fairly common, which is, I believe, an acquired affectation.

I think that it's mostly a social affection. Most of the gays I know of don't have it but the "we're here, we're queer" types tend to have it to some degree. I doubt it's anything natural but simply a stereotype used as a social affection.

Overbite or tongue piercings can do it.
