Ozone layer will be fine
According to NPR, a scientist study said that in 50 years, the ozone layer will grow back completely, anyone else heard about this?

That's not recent news. The hole at the South Pole got a lot of publicity when it moved north and began affecting parts of Chile, but at the same time its been greatly reduced in its depth and has basically split into two lesser holes.

Assuming we don't f it up again, the ozone will regrow in about 100-300 years time.

You know, there is a classic episode of GI Joe, where Cobra planned to exploit the hole in the ozone layer in order to make trillions by selling over priced sunscreen to the world, that is weeping right now.

Go find an Organic Chem textbook; Bromine is damn useful.TrailerParkJawa wrote:I read the articles that where in a the news a few days ago. That's certainly a postive. The article said that Bromine levels are coming down and that bromine is better at destroying ozone that CFC's. What industrial uses are there for bromine?

UV is overrated anyway. As long as you keep your skin out of direct sunlight, you'll be fine.

Of course there are other problems, but we should be happy that we are making headway on this one. If you are going to tell people and industry to change their behavior to help the environment, then you need to show them that their sacrifice is actually having a positive impact.FaxModem1 wrote:So, just what does this mean for Earth anyway? BTW - could it be that the scientists expected that pollution growth rate would be the same as today the coming 50 years? If the annual increase of pollution grows over the next 50 years, I have the feeling that the ozone layer won't close...

I think the point is that pollution growth rate is currently slowing, giving the ozone time tio regenerate.Simon H.Johansen wrote:BTW - could it be that the scientists expected that pollution growth rate would be the same as today the coming 50 years? The forecatss predict pollution to either stay at this level, or to decrease (slow in growth) at the current rate.

Well, maybe it is, but it may be decreasing in rate of growth due to all these environmental acts that most governments *cough cough* are passing.Simon H.Johansen wrote:???

*shrug* sorry, can't give you much information, but I would have thought that all the movements to save the ozone layer would have had some effect, hance the hole shrinking.

Overall Pollution in the USA declined by 13% in 2001
We're doing just fine on our own over here. I can't say how the former Soviet bloc and industrializing countries affect the overall outlook, however.

Pollution decline in USA doesn't mean a worldwide pollution decline - as you admit. The Duchess of Zeon wrote: Overall Pollution in the USA declined by 13% in 2001

I think that it's probably worse in a lot of third world countries - particularly the industrializing ones. (especially if they use obsolete technology in order to "hurry up" the industrialization, like the Soviet Union was prone to during the 1930s)
