Turkish Officials Swap Toilets for Prostitutes

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish authorities are investigating 47 village leaders on charges they siphoned money from a toilet-building project to hire prostitutes, a Turkish newspaper reported on Friday.

Dubbed "A Toilet for Every Village," the state-sponsored project provided cement, steel and other supplies to rural areas without proper sewers in poverty-stricken eastern Turkey.

The village leaders allegedly sold the supplies and went to the Black Sea city of Trabzon where they spent the money on foreign prostitutes, the mainstream Hurriyet newspaper said.

Authorities became suspicious when they discovered a spot market in cheap construction materials and found that 47 of the project's 66 villages still lacked toilets.

Duchess, have you ever been to Turkey? I have. The west of the country (everyting along the coast), is a beautiful landscape and a dotted with spraling metropolises that feature the almost unique arcitecture of anceint Greek/Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman/Muslim influences. Any thing East of that is little better than any other third world Middle Eastern/Muslim country with hardly any resemblence to the West.

And I will point out that this was in the North East (near the Black Sea), not an area that had seen any significant PKK mischief (which was in the South East).

Actually it just said "eastern Turkey" unless you've seen another article, with no implication on how far they went for prostitutes--possibly pretty far, as Trebizond has a booming prostitution industry with lots of Russian women working in brothels there.

Also, the north-east is very fascinating for a unique mix of cultures in its own right (not to mention that the Pontic shoreline is hardly without its own ruins)--and some cultures which retain pre-christian influences. You're right about the southeast, though.

You are right, so I was assuming. However I would point out that if they were from the southeastern villages authorities should have become suspicious when they started traveling over 400km away from their local villages. One assumes, that if they were from the south, they would have gone to Anatalya, or Adana, or even Mersin rather than Trabzon.

Turkey really is a country of contrasts. You wouldn't know that you are in the same country if you looked at pictures of the skyscraper-filled Istanbul and some poor rural village in east. There's no way the Turks can even dream of EU membership until they get things running, if ever.
