Okay, how many guys here cook?
I'm going to try and expand my culinary horizons beyond eggs and a grilled cheese maker, so I was just wondering how many other guys here cook anything edible? Not only does cooking equip you to feed yourself decent food, it also impresses the ladies more than most things. As far as I know, there are few things that a girl likes better than a guy who can cook her a nice meal.

I can do alright by myself. But I don't really like to cook if I don't have to so I'm lucky the wife does. And she's damn good at it too.

Yes...I watch Emeril
.
And I find Iron Chef both informative and hilarious.
Sadly I keep up my talents more because my girlfriends have lacked the skills of it, beyond boiling of water.
Edit: So because of this, and that I watched cooking shows almost as much as cartoons in my youth I've learned to do the 5 course meal...my kitchen truly makes one wonder, I should either be married or a cook.

Ah well...my cat does like my cooking, and it makes me go on midnight runs to a twenty four hour grocery store.

I've made cheesecakes that a New Yorker complimented me on. I also frequently make pasta salads, pastitsio (a Greek casserole) and a bunch of other stuff...

I know how you feel. Whenever I make eggs, one yolk will turn out nicely, but the other one will spill all over. It pisses me off like nothing else.Montcalm wrote:I can cook some good food, but like i said before i can`t break an egg without crushing it.

Well, anyone can cook and follow a recipe, going further and embellishing and improving takes more work - I can tell when something needs something, but I'm buggered if I know what. I am the best cook out of all my male friends, both at uni and home (and some of the women, although none of them are really big on cooking anyway) - uni life for me ranged from basic pasta/garlic meals to tuna steaks with lemon and coriander butter. I couldnt use the freezer because the rest of the flat stole all the space, so I had to cook fresh stuff all the time - not that I was complaining, but it did put my costs up slightly.
Parents are off on holiday atm, so tonight, Matthew, I shall be having a very rare steak, probably with some sort of pepper sauce. mmmm...

The trick to cracking eggs is, in my experience, to use your thumbs to apply pressure to the inside edges once you have a crack in the shell, rather than applying pressure from the outside. This, while it may cause egg white to get all over your thumbs and maybe poke them with the shell a little, prevents the shell from getting crushed.
It's not totally foolproof, but at least ~99% of the shell stays OUT of the pan.

The trick with eggs is getting the pan the right temperature, and patience. Eggs like lower temps, unless you're making an omelette.
Always use plastic spatulas.
Let the yolk firm up from below a little before flipping. Sunny side up eggs take a lot of oil, almost a deep fried effect with continued washing the upper surface with the oil, using the spatula.
My specialties are sauces, soups and stews. They're my favorite kinds of food, so naturally that's what I pay the most attention on. But I have yet to try something that hasn't worked out.
Well, in the past ten years, that is. This has NOT always been the case.![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Despite being an only child, I was never spoiled, and often forced to cook, but I guess thats a good thing. I can do simple things like Burgers, steaks, and chicken on the grill or in the oven(I can make some damn good rosemary chicken), I like making spagetti and do so once a week, although the only real talent I use for that is seasoning the ground beef for the meat sause, I just use Traditional sause from a can and store bought pasta. I can bake a lot of shit, and I have experience cooking chili and baking potatos in a fire pit out in the woods.

I've had some real flops... for example, when I was around 8 I came up with the brilliant idea of Parmesan Maple Toast.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.
If im cooking for me, it's usually whatever i can find covered in chilli and garlic.
if im cooking for others, i usually kick ass at whatever i make.
