As somebody who listens to metal, I in particular find the 1980s an interesting decade - it saw the genre divide into three sub-genres: Hair metal (eg. Motley Crue, Poison and Whitesnake) which was heavily inspired by glam-rock, thrash (eg. Metallica, Sodom and Anthrax) and Doom (eg. Candlemass,). Hair metal became wildly popular only to die at the hands of thrash and grunge, doom metal never got beyond the underground (or so it seems) but thrash became the major subgenre of metal and gave birth to early black metal (eg. Bathory, Celtic Frost) and Death metal (eg. Death, Possessed).
(I don't truly know where power metal fits into this)
