For a year now I have heard two things claimed:
1) The guns on an Acclamator are only scaled to be MTLs
2) The Clonetrooper guns have a yield of 8 MJ
Now I was at bootcamp when the film was released, so I obviously missed the original work. Could someone link to the proof, or say who did hte work, or provide the reasoning, or something? Thanks.

I believe the first is simply in response to those who felt that a warship with 10 times the volume of the Clone Wars transport would have heavy guns of the same yield.
I think someone eye-balled them as similar to at least the emplacements at what the EGVV pegs as the tractor beams (according to Saxton and ANH initial scene there are apparently medium guns there).
I think the second is based on the producing ~1 meter craters in ferrocrete, using concrete as a lower limit for a calc.

This is based on an assumption of linear scaling between the gun's size and energy. True, it may be more of an exponential scaling, but it's quite obvious that the Acclamator's gun turrets are significantly smaller than the HTL or lateral quadlaser batteries on an ISD.1) The guns on an Acclamator are only scaled to be MTLs

Err, thats what I'm getting at, did someone do scaling to determine the size og the guns on the acclamator, or was it just "eh, they look like what I think MTLs should be, therefore they are"?SPOOFE wrote:This is based on an assumption of linear scaling between the gun's size and energy. And adapting the fragmentation energy calculator to work for smaller values and return it in energy, and assuming that the .5 meter crater would correspond with a 1 meter diameter sphere of concrete with the bolt acting as a central explosive, the yield per shot is ~4 MJ, not 8.
So that wasn't the method used. What was?

I did my scaling based on the size of the various other weapons depicted in the AotC ICS, and then scaled them up to the MTL weapons to figure out how quickly firepower increased with the size of the barrel. It was an exponential increase (and it was very close on predicting the firepower of the weapons in the ICS). I then worked it out with the HTL's on the ISD and found them to be in the very high TT range. I tried to scale the DS I's superlaser back down to the MTL on the Acclamators, assuming that about 1/4 of the ship's total volume was devoted to the superlaser, but the result came out way high, so the DS's superlaser probably doesn't occupy such a large fraction of the internal volume of the DS.SPOOFE wrote:This is based on an assumption of linear scaling between the gun's size and energy. From the AOTC analysis on this site:
according to the SW2ICS, one max-power shot can blast a ½-metre crater in any ferrocrete wall. If we assume the properties of ferrocrete are halfway between those of concrete and steel, this indicates energy equivalence to roughly 2kg of TNT, or roughly eight times the charge of a modern MK3A2 concussion grenade, so their destructive capabilities are not surprising.
