Bush visits Tucson, Environmentalists to protest

Post by Tsyroc »

President Bush is supposed to be in town today to make a visit to Mt. Lemmon. He'll be touring the damage that was done during the Aspen Fire. He's also expected to be pushing for his forest management bill which is why there are going to be environmentalist protesters at the base of Mt. Lemmon.

Bush's Vist Riles Forest Rivals

One thing that isn't mentioned in the article is that there's already been a bit on an incident on Mt. Lemmon today. An intoxicated man was shot dead by sheriff's deputies when he tried to run them over with his truck as he ran the gate on Mt. Lemmon.

Mt. Lemmon has had controled access since the fire to prevent looting but this road block was specifically set up because of the President's visit.

Let me guess, Alyrium, you're one of those people who believes that we should combat all forest fires as soon as they break out to prevent the foo owl habitats from getting damaged.

Sure, then we can copy the Soviets methods and smother the resulting unstoppable infernos with tactical nuclear devices.

For someone who wants to be a naturalist you don't seem to know much. Bush is promoting a responsible logging program, not the devesating clear cutting but rather selective cutting. This is a good thing for both the forest and us humans. It clears out the forests, removes iflammable undergrowth and promotes the renewal of the forests.

It also has the benefit of stopping the sort of massive conflagerations that have plagued the western US for the last decade and a half. Because with out being cleared the forests will burn. It'll be cleared by us or by nature. It's by far better to clear it ourselves, with selective cutting and controlled burns, than waiting for it to erupt in huge uncontrollable fires.

Canada has adopted the sort of forest management policy a long time ago. And as you'll notice, they don't have the massive devestating fires anywhere near as often and their timber industry is a lot healthier. If the tree huggers would just exercise a little common sense both could win.

Think you knee jerk nit-wit! Try paying attention to the issue before you spout off like a fool.

That fire did look pretty cool especially at night. I'm not sure whether it, or Bush is going to cause more damage in the long run though....

Wow, thats rather crass. I disliked Clinton to the Nth degree, yet still watched the news and smirked happily when he came to Utah (the one and only time).

yes stormbringer because the answer to people speaking out against programs, politicians, and political moves by the government in a democracy is to tell them to leave rather than to stay and campaign for your position and then vote next time you get the chance. typical.

Moron, Ill spell things out for you.

Alyrium has repeatedly stated that he doesn't even care what a Republicans actual position is because he will hate them no matter what simply for being a party member, and has also stated his intention to leave the country. Of course only after spending another eight years or so getting a full education. He is a nee jerking idiot on politics just like you.

The best bit is Alyrium is just as much an unthinking illogical ideologue as the right-wingers he claims he derides. Me-too-ers. What a shame.

I love it when environmentalists form protests, because then you get to point out how much they killed 'Mother Earth' by driving/flying to the location. :D

I don't think so, as I read a book by the guy in charge of Biopreparat,
and it was just a typical anthrax outbreak, get sick, die etc, not a LSD
type outbreak

Actually, forest fires as horrible as they are for us, are needed by the environment.

Those forest fires, when they destroy patch of a forest, help the cycle of nature by putting nutients back into the soil.

Forest fires have been a natural process for millions of years, and without them, the forest would not be able to renew themselves.

Once the ashes have settled, the soil becomes more fertile and immediatly new plants will start to grow.

Bush's plan will hurt the forests and that natural cycle more than help it. And so would putting out every spark.

Granted we should contain them, mainly because of a 5 year drought that keeps them from burning out on their own but....

I have never said that. I would vote for a republican if they suported my views, but how often will you find one? hmm?

I have also decided to stick it out... Besides, it isnt as if bush will be reelected :P

You know, even if the political climat didnt suck(this will probably change, so I will not leave for this reason... unless congress is disbanded :P ), I would just may leave anyway. That's why you thin the forests out, numbnuts. We've coddled the forests for too long, and there's too much underbrush. Let it burn normally right NOW and you'll only get more conflagrations like the Arizona fires.

I will have to check out Bush's plan again, but it is the underbush that isnt productive to the logging industry.

Buth would hurt actually. You thin out the underbrush, and when te oldgrowth dies, so does the forest, you clear out the oldgrowth... well, you kill off much of te forest ecosystm.

You thin out the oldgrowth, you have done something pointless...

However, we do need a short-term solution. This, I dont know how to accomplish...

However, for the long run(and removing people from the equation) letting the forests burn and let things go back to their natural state... but that doesnt take humans into account :P

Then let those fires happen. Most areas need to be burned at least once a century to stay healthy, and "selective harvesting" is hardly a healthy practice for a forest. Unless, of course, you are telling me that a forest fire normally removes the trunks of the trees from the area, builds logging roads, and that loggers routinely apply heat to the area so that trees such as jack pine can seed.
