I'm getting a peacock!
As some of you know I'm a big bird person, I work with birds of prey on saturdays, I plan to go to college for Ornithology, I've been raising chickens as pets and for breeding experiments(trying to get cool mixed combonations, like my Buffish, a mix between a Buff Orphington and a White Crested Black Polish, best looking chickens I've ever seen). Over the years I've tried with very poor luck to raise a peacock as a pet. First two I had were killed when my mom left them alone with my dogs to take a picture of them playing together and they played too rough. The second pair drown in the rain(they aren't too bright, they like to stare up at the rain, and they'll drown, turkeys to it too). My most recent attempt was my most sucessful, about 4 years ago. I got him really imprinted, he would sit on my shoulder whenever as I walked around, he would beat up against the window to get into the air conditioning, and he would wait around outside for me to get off the school bus so I would feed him chunks of grilled cheese sandwiches. Unfortunately before he was fully grown he was killed by a Racoon. Been trying since then to hatch another but it was no luck. Today my mom got a call from someone that my mom called about peacocks and one of the eggs hatched a couple weeks before the others were suppose to and that if we wanted it, we could have it. So I'm going ot have another peacock!

It hatched yesterday, it hatched a few weeks earlier than the other ones, we weren't sure we were going to get one, cuase she didn't know how many would hatch and had orders, but this one hatched early, and would need to be taken care of for 2 weeks while the others hatched, so she instead decided to sell it to us.Trytostaydead wrote:Yay! Good for you.. I hear peacocks taste great!![]()
But hatched a few weeks already? Isn't it too late for imprinting then?

There used to be a few people in WV that raised peacocks. For such gorgeous birds, they've got a horrific cry!
There's a raptor rehibilitation center a couple hours away. They come to the fairs to educate about raptors, what to do if you find an injured bird, etc. I know they often are asking for volunteers.

Holy crap, you can actually own and raise peacocks? I thought they only existed in the zoo!
Of course, all peacocks should be wiped from the face of the Earth. All birds are evil. The only birds that deserve to exist are chickens, emus, and penguins. The first just tastes too good to lose, the latter two are just plain cool.

But, I am glad you have found something you like to do. Once I have my drivers liscence, and hunting liscence, I will be volunteering with my local herpetological association to rescue snakes people find in their yards(you know how stupid people are, they build a house and expect the former residents to just leave

It's been sleeping on my shoulder for a couple of hours and already recognizes me, so I think it'll be fairly imprinted.Andrew J. wrote:I saw a peacock once, on a nature trail in Hawaii. It was very pretty but it got rattled real easily. You had better train it to not be nervous.

Just curious, how much land do you have for all these birds?
There is a historical farm nearby, they have a few peacocks in addition to a bunch of chickens ( the kind you'd find on a farm in the late 1800's.) , goats, and pigs.
Peacocks make really loud noises, I was surprised cause I could hear them before I knew what was making that noise.
