European Heatwave Claims 100 lives in Paris

Post by Stravo »

100 reported dead in Paris heat
Tuesday, August 12, 2003 Posted: 8:58 AM EDT (1258 GMT)

PARIS, France (CNN) -- At least 100 people have died from heat-related causes in the last eight days in the Paris area as scorching temperatures continue to bake much of Europe, a French medical official said.

Patrick Pelloux of France's emergency doctors' association said about 50 deaths in the past four days pushed the total number of heat-related deaths since August 4 above 100.

"We are not in the slightest bit prepared for this catastrophe because it is historic," said Pelloux, who has criticized the government's surgeon general for characterizing the deaths as natural.

"It is the first time that we have been confronted by so many incoming of patients because of such significant temperatures," Pelloux said.

Doctors have warned that many more people will die unless the government acknowledges there is a crisis.

The French Health Ministry responded to the criticism Monday, insisting there has been no massive increase in emergencies, even if more elderly people were being admitted to hospital.

The government said it was unclear if the heat was to blame.

"People don't come in with 'dying of heat' on their foreheads," The Associated Press quoted Stephane Grossier of the Health Ministry as saying. "Things are not as simple as they seem."

But doctors say the heat wave is worse than that endured by Chicago in 1995, when 700 people died from heat-related illnesses in the U.S. city.

"In Chicago, for three days temperatures were reaching 37 degrees Celcius (98.6 Fahrenheit). Here we have had temperatures reaching 40 C (104 F) and above in Paris for almost 10 days," Pelloux said.

Doctors say this is not just a Parisian problem, but that cities in the south of France are better equipped to deal with the heat wave. Paris hospitals are struggling to cope, with 500 new cases of heat-related illness admitted over the past three days.

Doctors are trying to free up as many hospital beds as they can in Paris, canceling non-urgent procedures and operations. Some staff are also voluntarily canceling their holidays or coming back from breaks to help out.

Also, funeral directors say demands for their services has risen sharply since the heat wave took hold, AP said. France's largest undertaker, Les Pompes funebres generales, said it has handled 50 percent more bodies in Paris and that the increase was "tied to the heat wave."

French power giant EDF also is struggling against the heat, with its chairman urging consumers to limit their electricity use.

"We are mobilizing all possible means to develop production," Francois Roussely told RTL radio, AP said. "The biggest danger would be to lose electricity."

Parts of the Elbe River are dry (below) a year after much of Dresden, Germany, was under water.
On Monday, France exempted its nuclear power stations from rules protecting rivers in a bid to meet surging demand for electricity and stave off power blackouts.

The plants can now put the cooling water they use back into rivers at higher temperatures than usually allowed.

Two German states also temporarily raised cooling water temperature limits from nuclear plants, while Swiss power officials cut output rather than put hotter water into the country's rivers, Reuters reported.

Elsewhere across Europe, officials have reported at least 45 heat-related deaths, including five people found dead after trying to flee a forest fire near Barcelona, Spain.

Forecasters are predicting relief by the weekend, if not sooner.

Dominique Escale of Meteo France said temperatures throughout France were expected to drop by midweek, although they would remain well above average, AP reported.

Spain's weather service said there would be another week of heat before a cold front moved in from the Atlantic, Reuters reported.

"We're going to see a complete change, with a definite drop (in temperatures) on Friday and a little more on Saturday," a spokeswoman for Portugal's weather service said.

Temperatures were cooler in Britain after the nation recorded its hottest day ever Sunday -- 38.1C (100.5 F) at Gravesend in Kent, southern England.

This is nasty. I had a friend in Chicago during theri heat wave that killed 700 people mentioned in this story and she was lucky in that she had an air conditioner.

I noticed a trend as well. Olrik mentioned that the Govt of Portugal was refusing to acknowledge that the country was going through a crisis with the forest fires and now the french government refuses to acknowlegdge an emergency with the heat wave, but when you lift regulations on Nuke plants on dumping their cooling water into rivers there HAS to be something wrong. Is there some negative consequence to these countries should they acknowledge an emergency??

The weather here in England has been bizarre. We've been having this massive heatwave for about a week, but on Sunday we had a rainstorm that flooded half the town. I've never seen anything like it, I woke up at 11AM and thought it was still the middle of the night! I assume it was because the clouds were almost totally obscuring the sun.

Well, unless you're going hiking through a forest, or do some extra strenous sports, there's no real danger...
You just have to take it a few notches down, and relax a bit.
It's more dangerous for very small kids, and old people. And those who have to do hard work in the heat...

Dehydration and greatly elevated body temperature(I dont the english term for it) for example.

It depends much on how old and how healthy you are. Young children and the elderly especially must be careful.

If your system is already fighting something off then the added burden can be enough to kill you.

Most if not all of those 100 that died in Paris is elderly ppl IIRC.

My own patients are suffering as well and we have "only" 32 degress Celcius compared to Frances 40. Thankfully none have died :)(altho two had to be taken to the hospital).

Of cource for an aussie Im sure 40 degress Celcius is nothing ;).

Dont forget that inside buildings the temp could be higher than outside. The article did not say so, but are we to infer that A/C is not common in Paris?

The French are having problems with the nuke plants because the temps outside are so high that the cooling systems are overloaded and the reactors overheating as a result. They've had to have additional coolinb by having the fire departments spray water on the outside of the reactor buildings.

Part of the problem is that they take the cooling water from the rivers, but with the temperatures running so high for so long, the river water is probably at the maximum temperature allowed for outgoing cooling water to begin with, so it's either shut down the plants or break the regs.

You could say they surrendered to high temperatures. How funny would it be if merican Air Conditioners found their way into french homes to spare them the misery.

There spraying water on the cooling towers, if you needed to cool down the reactors containment dome that way it would indicate something on the lines of a meltdown.

Luckily a number of French nuclear plants use the ocean for cooling so at least they should be fine and keep the power on.

You know what's insulting(not really)?

Chanel 3 here in Phoenix is calling the upcoming 101 Farenheit predicted highs of the weekend COOL! Phoenix or not, 101 is NOT cool!
And it's not like they called it a "cooling trend", or "cooler", but COOL!
It was 110 on the thermometer outside when I looked a couple hours ago, BTW.

I'm not trying to downplay the problems in Europe, I wouldn't be surprised if those people who've died were elderly, possibly without so much as a fan, in a closed up house.*shudders*

Drink your water, Euro-friends, and plenty of it. Most important thing to remember in the heat.

Looks like they don't want to heat up the river to levels that might start screwing with the local ecosystem.

Last year in November we had a great 2 weeks with nice temps up around 40+ degrees. THEN Summer started. My AC got a lot of workout.

Sheesh. More proof that heat is bad. That's why I never plan to live inland.

Cooling towers, yes, that was the word I was looking for. Thanks. Didn't mean to give the wrong impression.

It was the same in Melbourne. I went surfing every day that week, very nice!

Mind you, it's torture trying to sleep in that kind of heat.
