How long will Canada be around? (secessionist movements)
Over the years I've heard a number of arguments coming from Canada about secessionist movements, not just those nutjobs in Quebec but from many of the Western provinces as well. The fact that these arguments don't come exclusively from nutcases, but rather people in the mainstream leads me to believe that the end of Canada as it has been for years may be a very real possibility in the future.
Of course, I don't really know much about this matter at all. Anyone who does, how long do you think it will be before one of these secessionist movements really gains steam and becomes successful (or if one will never be successful at all)? Which provinces do you see leaving, and which staying in?

You know how some spoiled teenagers often gripe that they want to leave home? By the way, the fact that a western politician says something does not mean it didn't come from a nutcase.

However, I don't see the country falling apart unless a secessionist province is given automatic entry into the US (something I don't see happening). Isolation next to relatively large nation-states is not a good idea from a perspective of trade agreements and currencies and all of the other things that would have to be separately negotiated. Many politicians stoke the fires of separatism in order to win elections, but that doesn't mean they would actually try it.

Fascinatingly convienent, this topic.
A friend and I were having a conversation on MSN. Basically, he believes that, within a few years, it would be fully possible to annex Canada willingly into the United States, and that it would be beneficial to everyone involved.
So, what're the thoughts of ye board members?

the Maritimes actually had a contingency plan in place for a possible Quebec seccession. It involved pettioning the US Congress for commonwealth or territorial status IIRC...... That aside, i imagine Rene Levesque would have eventually started a fight with the Canadian remnant and pissed off the US, resulting the the renaming of quebec to East Ontario and North Vermont.RogueIce wrote:We're not redoing the flag over Canada. Is Quebec bordered with North Dakota?Col. Crackpot wrote:the Maritimes actually had a contingency plan in place for a possible Quebec seccession. If that's the case, they can become a US state, and the current North Dakota will be Middle Dakota, while Quebec is renamed North Dakota.
Or, so we can preserve the current flag, the two current Dakota will merge as a larger South Dakota, with the new North Dakota being old Quebec (or whatever is right above it). Thus preserving the 50 stars, 50 states, and even the same names to boot.

It may happen eventually given the course of time, since it seems to be the fate of all large nation-states to break up into smaller, independent states. But for as long as the federal union remains politically and economically stable and the constituent parts of it gain advantage through union, no secessionist movement will ever be taken seriously.

The US flags been designed out to around 100 states so that really wouldn't be an issue.

100 states? Wow, we're gonna have to get busy then!Sea Skimmer wrote:The US flags been designed out to around 100 states so that really wouldn't be an issue.
But it'll still be a bitch to replace every single American flag out there, in terms of the flags themselves, patches, logos, etc...

You`ll have a huge job of splitting and naming new states once you get Canada.RogueIce wrote:100 states? Wow, we're gonna have to get busy then!Sea Skimmer wrote:The US flags been designed out to around 100 states so that really wouldn't be an issue.

Why would you want to do that? the provincial infrastructure already exists for the current sizes. Splitting would simply cause a headache.Montcalm wrote:You`ll have a huge job of splitting and naming new states once you get Canada.RogueIce wrote:100 states? There are only around 33 million people in the country, sure it's big in terms of land area but I don't think a single province would be broken up. I can't think of any reason why we'd do that.Montcalm wrote:

Here is a modest proposal of how the Canadian provinces would be divided up over at the XP party of the USA.
http://hometown.aol.com/XPUS/Canstatemap.html
ere are some figues I Found from a few soources about a possible Canadian Representation in the House of Representatives:
Alberta
5
British Columbia
6
Manitoba
2
Atlantic Provinces* (by whatever name) 5
Ontario
18
Quebec
13
Saskatchewan
2
* Four provinces united. If admitted separately: New Brunswick, 2 (1.4);
Newfoundland, 1 (1.1); Nova Scotia, 2 (1.7); Prince Edward Island, 1 (.2).
Of course all Canadian Provinces are gureenteed 2 Senators., 2 (1.7);

True, but Alaska isn't exactly a major industrial centre. If Canada were absorbed into the US, the new top rankings for state land areas would be:Durran Korr wrote:Actually, Alaska is the biggest state. So Texas is already a loser.
1) Quebec: ~640000 square miles
2) Alaska: ~586000 square miles
3) Northwest Territories: ~450000 square miles
4) Ontario: ~413000 square miles
5) British Columbia: ~389000 square miles
6) Texas: ~268000 square miles
Dropping from #2 all the way down to #6 would just ruin Dubya's day, particularly since many of those new states would be much more of an economic and social presence in the union than Alaska
Mind you, I suspect that having the largest state in the nation being a French-speaking state would cause a tremendous uproar in the US

Aside from Quebec and Ontario, The rest would mean jack politically becuase British Columbia and British Columbia have smaller populations than NY, California, Texas and would have alot less power in the HOR. Anyobody who wins that states of Texas, California, and Ontario would be automattically win the White House.Darth Wong wrote:True, but Alaska isn't exactly a major industrial centre.
