The extra-special additions of the original trilogy
What scenes, visual effects, etc. would you change if you were in charge of creating the new special editions for the OT?
For me most of the OT is gold but there are a few things I'd change. The main one being the entire rancor scene in ROTC. Yes its classic stop-motion animation, but come on it holds up about as well as Clash of the Titans Seriously can you imagine what ILM or WETA (the guys who did the effects for LOTR) could do with that scene.
I also might consider going with a CG yoda to replace the puppet in TESB and ROTJ. What do you all think?

Replace Yoda, and I will go on a killing spree!
Umm. maybe add some cap ship engagements in ROTJ, besides that I didn't think that the SE did anything more for the movie. Just me I guess.

Is the rancor that beast that ate the pig-guard creature under Jabba's palace? There was no stop-motion in that scene, it's simple video editing (a guy disguised as a giant beast, overlayed on the Luke scene). I don't think it looks bad, if anything I'd try to fix the matte problems with the hand and Luke.
I think Yoda's puppet is perfect, don't know why change it. CGI is overrated these days.
I'd go with the matting on the Rancor as well.
I wouldn't mind them making the Ewoks a little more real looking. While wer at it do something about the Gamoran (the pig guys) Guards too.
I would kind of like to see one of the ISD's in ESB take out one of the escaping Rebel Transports just so we can see some massive fire power.
It would add a bit of drama to those that do get away.

NO!!!
Though you can have a blue skinned admiral with red eyes being thrown off the walkway on Coruscent if you want.
In order;
1/ MORE CAPITAL SHIPS in RotJ on both sides and show close ups of the main guns being used! Also MORE fighters!
2/ Show a few more Ewoks being killed on Endor, and show the rebel commandos using equipment to jam the Imperial tactical communications. Finally remove any doubt that the Ewoks were being forced back before Chewie stole the AT-ST and Han tricked the garrison into opening the doors with a few more battle-scenes with the Ewoks retreating.
3/ Show Piett and/or Jerjerrod trying to get instructions from Palpatine during the battle, and refusing to improvise without permission.
4/ Show Palpatine rubbing his feet on the floor to build up a static charge before he zaps Luke!

Also digitally re-do all the scenes set inside the Falcon, so the internal layout actually fits into the exterior!

Well...minus 5 minutes of beatdown....but definately add Thrawn...We can only hope that Lucas not only creates episodes 7-9 but uses Thrawn SOMEWHERE in them.

I hope you learned your lesson in mocking Thrawn, Of course I'm not sure if you have a functioning ear left so you might not be able to hear me

Top Ten noticable changes in the Star Wars SSE...
...if it was rewritten by Wars debaters:
10. Han's quote regarding the destruction of Alderaan dubbed over to
read "That's impossible! It would take half the sector fleet! A million
ships with more firepower than-"
9. Extra 100,000 ships added to Battle of Endor
8. Camera zooms in for an inordinate amount of time for the 90 km deep
crater caused by the At-At blasters on Hoth
7. Tantive IV replaced by U.S.S. Enterprise
6. Explosion from ANH Proton torpedo near-miss blows up the X-Wing
fighter and a huge chunk of the DS1
5. All instances of the word "laser" replaced with "plasma" or "charged particle" e.g. plasma cannons, turbo-plasma cannon
4. Solo's blaster creates kiloton-level explosions in Mos Eisely. The
stormtroopers shrug off the blasts
3. Density of asteroids in the Hoth system increased such that the only
way to view starships is from the empty clearing of destroyed asteroids
immediately surrounding the ships.
2. Computer screens in the background give technical readings in plain
English. The computer's on Amidala's Cruiser give a 60,000 LY distance
for a hyperspace jump and an ETA of 2 hours.
1. Trade Federation replaced with United Federation of Planets. Legions
of redshirts are annhilated by Jar Jar Binks.

Sorry, some of the scene may be a guy in a suit, a lot of it is clearly stop-motion. Heck in a few places Luke is a marionette. The part where its head gets crushed, is definitely puppet animation. Now, the Wompa snow beast that was a guy in a suit.Is the rancor that beast that ate the pig-guard creature under Jabba's palace? There was no stop-motion in that scene, it's simple video editing (a guy disguised as a giant beast, overlayed on the Luke scene). I don't think it looks bad, if anything I'd try to fix the matte problems with the hand and Luke.
Now, I would probably also add more capital ship combat to ROTJ, and have the battle more closely follow the novel. Oh, yeah the number of ships at the battle of Endor would be at least doubled. Personally I'd love to see the Mon Cal cruisers really pound down the Executer's shields. Oh, and stormies handing the Ewok their fuzzy little asses.
While its a tough call on whether or not to replace the Yoda muppet. Lets remember that with digital televisions, the flaws that used to be covered by film and analog systems are going to be really obvious. Even now if you look at the Dagobah scenes closely, you can see wires and matte lines.
I'd also re-edit TESB so that the cuts between Luke’s training and Han & Leia's trip to Bespin would be quicker. Hmmm...maybe CG in some additional walkers into the Hoth battle.
I'm pretty sure Thrawn wouldn't take kindly to being 'used' by you, and you'd be far to busy begging for your pathetic life to kick my arse!Captain_Cyran wrote:Ah, but I use Thrawn and he tells me of some chink of your armor and I kick your ass MWAHAHAHA .

1) Fix the damn ANH lightsaber duel. It look's like Darth's schlong is bursting out of his suit.
2) Cut-away of Thrawn at the end of ROTJ
3) More capital ships at ROTJ. Many, many more.
4) More ground combat in TESB and ROTJ. Much more.

Were to start, were to start.
ANH
Fix Obi Wan's sabre. It turns into a metal rod a couple of times.
Fix Jabba. That CG sucked.
Put Han back to shooting first. They seem like they shoot at about the same time, but hell, No shots fired from Greedo.
When they primary ignition for the superlaser commences, one of the officers exclaims, 'Alderaan's shield is up.'
ESB
More Walkers, more speeders zipping around.
The Gallofrees taking pot shots at a disabled ISD
ISD HTLs opening up and ripping apart a transport of any kind fleeing.
An HTL blast obliterating a massive asteroid.
Mon Cals in the background, and the Y-Head corvette at the end.
An A-Wing or a B-Wing flying around.
RotJ
Clean up the black line around the Rancor's arm. (They did it for the speeders in ESB)
More Mon Cals engaging ISDs. Again an HTL barrage.
An A-Wing pilot crying out 'Knock out the Star Destroyers sensors!' then the globe goes up.

Nope, sorry, no stop motion there at all. Since stop motion is so damn obvious (just watch an AT-ST, even AT-ATs aren't usually stop-motion, only the AT-STs because nobody can build yet a device that can maneuver in two legs reliably) it would stick out like Vader's schlong in that ANH scene somebody mentioned. Puppets, probably. Huge fake hand, definitely. No stop motion.Spartan wrote:Sorry, some of the scene may be a guy in a suit, a lot of it is clearly stop-motion. Whether the beast is a guy in a suit, or a full puppet, or a suit with puppet-parts doesn't change the fact that there's zero stop-motion in that scene.
I just checked the entire scene in my computer several times. It confirms my theory that there wasn't any stop-motion with the rancor. Maybe you're mixing it with memories from the evil beast in the Ewok Adventure.
Slartibartfast, I just rewatched it that scence and you are correct that it must not be stop motion the movements are to smooth, its more likely a puppet and a minature set piece. Funny how we often remember movies the way we want, and not necessarily how they were. I concede. But you have to admit that a much more teriffying and more believable rancor could be created with a CG character.
ANH
1) How about this a brief scene from the surface of Alderaan of people looking up at the sky as the DS appears in obit.
2) a Quick scene: Showing Adm. Ackabar on the bride of Home-one being told by Mon Motha that he must abandon those who remain on Yavin base to there fate. Against stiring music, the small rebel fleet jumps out of the system just as the DS arrives in system. Tarkin (voice over) We'll deal with them soon enough.
ESB
1) A Quick montage of scenes at the begining showing the being beat down after the destruction of the DS. Cut from stormies beating down an uprising, to ties chasing rebel ships, and few other clips.
Then finish the montage with a several seconds shot of ISD slowly pulling away from a molten burning world!
ROTJ
1) CG in a couple of shots that show an absolute swarm of Ewoks rushing the Storm trooper's positions. It should clearly show that the odds are overwhelming. Something like Blackhawk down would do nicely. Hell yeah! Throw in a shot with a couple of outnumbered stormies picking off the little savages as they rush their position.
Why would one SW fan wish that horror on another? You might as well say how did I like the Holiday Special, man!!Maybe you're mixing it with memories from the evil beast in the Ewok Adventure.

Oh man enough of the Wars debate suggestions already!
A New Hope
- back to Greedo doesn't fire first
- remove the Jabba scene- it looks ridiculous
- the Death Star looks more like the Death Star 2 in terms of detail though not size (lights and such)
- fix Obi-Wan's sabre in the fight with Vader- still can't believe they didn't fix it in the SE
- make all Stormtroopers the same height via CG; considering Temura Morrison (Jango Fett) has already done their voice-overs (still haven't heard confirmation of this)
- give the surface of the Death Star more detail- more similar to the Death Star 2
Empire Strikes Back
- More AT-ATs (only five seen in the original battle)
- More AT-STs; according to starwars.com they were supposed to be more prominent- unfortunately one shot of where a speeder shoots at one and flies over it was ruined
- Imperial air support (LAAT successors?)
- Escaping Rebel transports getting destroyed
Return of the Jedi
- expanded Rebel fleet- including the 'rag-tag' ships we see at the end of ESB, along with CG versions of the various Mon Calamari cruisers that couldn't be built by ILM because of time constraints. See drawings of them at Star Wars Technical Commentaries
- more Rebel fighters
- the cut B-Wing scene (taking out a Star Destroyer)
- close ups of weapons turrets: at Star Wars Technical Commentaries there's a art department drawing of 'Star Destroyer Guns' that were not used in the film. Also close-ups of some HTLs
- massive amounts of weapons fire throughout the whole battle- similar to the barrages the Tradefed battleships were producing in TPM against the Royal Yacht.
- the Executor bitch-slapping Rebel cruisers before it gets destroyed
- Star Destroyers and Cruisers engaging each other at "point blank range"
- the Death Star blowing up more cruisers
- TIE fighters killing more Rebels

Only three types of Mon Calamari Cruisers made it to the screen in ROTJ:
- The 'Home One' type: remember this is a type, not a single ship. Saxton proves there is more than one seen on screen.
- The 'Liberty' or 'winged' type: first to be taken out by the Death Star
- the 'pearly wingless' type: white hull, without wings, but in other ways similar to the 'winged type'. Second to be taken out by the Death Star
