I asked a few honest questions there (in the forums) with some thoughts (after a little bit of browsing out of curiosity) and was assaulted with a bizarre, almost cult-like mentality by some who seem to ferverently believe that man in question is still being held. Needless to say, in light of the latest news regarding him and the facts on the ground as they are now, he is 99% certainly dead.
Does anyone know anything about this? I got zero facts from these people. At best, I was directed to a book by someone else.

Well, I suppose there's an outside chance that he could be held captive still by one of the remaining higher-ups so that, should he ever get cornered, said individual could use him as a bargaining chip--but then, there's a statistical chance that I could find a winning lotto ticket on a street corner tommorow, too.
Basically, I would submit that the people over there have gotten caught up in the very emotional hope that he's still alive--the thing was basically a gut-wrenching roller-coaster for some people (especially his relatives)--and some of them may have actually been the ones who responded to you.

Wow, there are some serieous raw nerves over there just laying aroung waiting to be stepped on.
From what I understand, it is highly likely that Spiecher survived the downing and probably was captured and held. But the possibility of him still being alive now, well unfortunately I think he's been gone for a couple years now.
The question is, did the goverment know about or suspect that Spiecher was a POW in Iraq durring the early and mid '90's?

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Almost certainly not, the suggestion only came up after an Air Force team reached the wreck and found the ejection seat and that was in 1996 IIRC, it might have been 1998.Knife wrote: The question is, did the goverment know about or suspect that Spiecher was a POW in Iraq durring the early and mid '90's?

Whether he was alive then, it's almost certain he's not now. Most likely he was killed a long time ago by Hussien and wound up in an unmarked grave. As far as I know we have zero evidence he's alive even with us more or less in control of Iraq.
Hopefully someone will tell us what happened but I doubt any one would admit complicity in the crime.

From what I've heard second or third hand about him, the other pilots in his squadron said they saw his plane go up in a big fireball when it was hit. So when he didn't turn up as an admitted Iraqi prisoner he was presumed dead.
Isn't it possible that even if he did manage to eject that he died from injuries shortly there after.
It just seems odd to me that the Iraqis would bother to keep one F/A-18 pilot prisoner when they put so many of the other people they shot down on television. Granted Hussein and his sons were some sick and twisted bastards but keeping one prisoner to screw with seems pretty risky considering the post Gulf War I situation in Iraq. I suppose they might not have expected it to last so long but even then they were potentially asking for more trouble.
