IMI optimistic US will lift ban on Uzi sales

Israel Military Industries sources say the company wants to bring in partners for its light arms factory.

Sources inform “Globes” that Uzi manufacturer Israel Military Industries is optimistic that it will be able to resume sales in the US. Former President Bill Clinton signed a bill banning certain types of automatic and semi-automatic weapons, including the Uzi, blocking signed contracts worth millions of dollars.

The law expires next year, and IMI believes that the Republican administration and Republican-controlled Congress will not renew it.

The Republicans are close to the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA), which backs US gun makers. The NRA is one of the strongest lobbies in the US, basing its pro-gun arguments on the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

IMI sources said the company would focus in the future on the mini- Uzi, which currently requires a license to buy.

"We plan to bring in partners to the light arms plant, which also makes the Uzi," said the sources. "The fact that the law will expire and the US market will be reopened to us may raise the value of the factory. We'll be pleased if the law is changed before the investors visit the factory. At this stage, we have no special deployment in advance of a change in policy in the US."

That dream of a civilian army is ever so much closer, now all I need is for Australian gun laws to relax a bit.

Stupid H&K, leaving us stuck with endless AK47 and M16 modifications. The SIG550 however will be very welcome.

Just a silly little question....really, what in the fuck is a civillian application for these weapons?

Of course, I forgot, semi-automatic....or even fully automatic pistols....are clearly of great utility in the sport of hunting......

Changing the rules are we? You asked for an application, and I gave you some. However, legalising auto weapons would be totally moronic.

Doesn't matter. In a free society, it's up to the state to prove that these weapons (or anything else it would like to ban) as so dangerous that banning them will produce a demonstrable, objectively verifiable improvement in public safety large enough to justify intruding on the individual rights of gun owners (or potential gun owners). The state can't and won't because these weapons, despite their abilities and their scary looks, are not used in crimes, even of the "maniac guns down his entire office" type. Common criminals don't use them because they're hard to conceal and a waste of money, not to mention harder to dispose of if they actually do shoot somebody. Lone nut snipers are better off using rifles, which by your "what can you use them for" litmus test, are legitimate hunting weapons. The one criminal application they might have is in shooting sprees, but despite how much media attention they get, they're so rare the odds of dying in one is a statistical nonentity, and anyway, they can and have been conducted effectively with pistols and legal semiautomatic rifles.

Which brings me to my next point: full auto weapons are already illegal and that's not likely to change. The so-called "assualt rifle" is a badly chosen marketing term, not a type of weapon. The weapons chosen for the assault weapon ban were chosen not on their rate of fire, caliber, magazine size, or anything else to do with the gun's performance, but rather their appearance. The AWB was primarily a ban on scary looking guns. Congress, in all its legislative majesty, outlawed the plastic stock.

Democracy is stupid and ugly. We all know this. Like RedImp said, these weapons are banned not because they are dangerous, but because stupid people are dangerous. And there are far too many stupid people willing to jump up and down and scream 'GUNS KILL DREAMS!'.

However, one of the benefits of democracy is that people, despite our best efforts, do not, at the moment, live forever. Eventually, hopefully, as Congress is replaced by newer-generation individuals who don't have this rabid antigun mentality, such senseless and offensive bans will be lifted.

Same reason as owning a vehicle that has a top speed above any posted speed limit. Because its fucking cool when used safely and properly. Firing weapons at a firing range, especialy fast semi-autos or fully automatics is FUN.

 I see you aren't very well versed in the applications of semi-automatic pistols. The Colt 1911A1 .45ACP is one of the most popular target shooting and self defense pistols in existence, as well as a weapon widely used in hunting. There are MANY semi-auto pistols that are used for target and hunting purposes.

And the posted guns are, as previously said, effing cool and fun to shoot!

I bet firing a RPG into a mountain would be even cooler and funnier, let's legalise those!

I dunno man, doesn't Heston want people to own operational tanks?

Nice red herring. No one here is advocating RPG legalisation on the basis of the fact that shooting them is fun.

Yeah, I know that

It was simply a question about Heston
