According to my dad, the whole society is a big joke..Which I suspected back a page (I believe) when I quoted those two news items..

There will never be a resolution in the evolution vs creationism debate because neither side can conclusively prove that they are right. The creationists can't prove that they're right becuase they're not, and the evolutionists can't prove that they're right because the creationists are too damn stupid to listen.

The flat earth thing is a joke site:
After spending over sixteen million dollars and using over 48 thousand yards of industrial strength strapping tape, we of the Flat Earth Society were able to construct an enormously powerful neurotransmitter that can implant suggestions directly into the brains of the nearby non-Flat Earthers. Having set it up just outside of the Russian Antarctic exploration post (Vostok), we are awaiting word that all three scientists and 174 penguins have been shown the light.

On the flat-earther argument:

They don't realize that there is no up or down in space: They are defined by the Earth's center of gravity. When you fall, you're falling toward a certain point in the center of the earth, and gravity is formed by the Earth's rotation, I believe. Even if I'm wrong, I'm still better than those flat-earthers.

No, you're wrong about that. Gravity always exists between two bodies with masses, and it increases with the mass of the bodies and decreases with the square of the distance between the mass centres of those two bodies. To calculate the gravity of earth (mass mt) you (mass m1) suffer, you just have to equal the force suffered by you (m1*a) with the expression for F. d is the earth radius and G the universal constant

F=G*m1*mt/d^2 = m1*a <=> a = G*mt/d^2 = 9.81 m/s^2

Well, AALCS was certainly wrong on the mechanism, but was right on the concept. Once you get out in space,, or into a stable orbit, there is no up or down - the relevant forces go into producing other effects (like a circular orbit). (The gravitational force causes an orbiting object to change direction towards the center of the larger mass, but if the orbiting object is moving at the right speed, it ends up moving in a circular or elliptical orbit, and never actually spirals inwards or outwards.)

Well yes, but if you are out there you're still be attracted to Earth. If you're not moving in orbit then you'll crash.
Earth could be perfectly still, without rotating, and we would still be attracted by it, we wouldn't be flying to outer space.

No, we were talking about how orbital mechanics works - whether the society is a joke or not, it is still interesting to dissect the 'arguments' they present in favour of a flat earth.

Or in this case, to look at the difference between a rough grasp of the concept of gravity, and actual exposure to the laws of gravitation (the first will get you by most of the time, but don't try and do any engineering with it!)

They don't need to listen to any proof of a round Earth, as long as they keep thier noses up their asses, and constantly mention a vast scientific conspiracy. Since proof of a round earth is so widespread, this global conspiracy may extend to historians, biologists, professors, or dealers.

And, if the earth is flat, how do you have sattelite TV? Or, is your cable provider part of the conspiracy?

I suppose that what most saddens me is the fact that so many of these lunatics claim to be creationists. I'm sorry, but I'm a creationist too (the deluded fool that I am), and I think they're full of crap. Of course the Earth is not hollow... unless every single other spacial body is hollow, or the sections of the earth that are really there are lined with something heavy (like neutronium), or everything that we know about gravity is fundamentally WRONG. Do not these people think? Cannot they feel the force that holds them down? WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE WORLD?!?!?

I agree with whoever said that these people should not be allowed to breed... the future already looks dreary enough as it is.

I really don't care to debate it... I mean, some people believe that we were made, and some people prefer to think that we just happened to be. That's not good or bad. Every person is entitled to think whatever we choose, whether we were made by God, evolved from apes, or are the excretions of a great humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish (the state fish of Hawaii, by the way). Since I have that choice, I choose to sooth my poor self-confidence by saying that my existence is special and has a purpose.

Frankly, though, in the long run, I don't give a damn. I mean, how does it matter that we got here? Let's just agree on the fact that we're here now, and stop arguing over how the whole thing happened.

I try not to be... I mean, if I meant to piss off everyone I meant, I sure could, no trouble at all. But why bother? Makes my life easier and a lot more interesting if I'm willing to be flexable and concede to the rights of others to believe whatever the hell they want. But anyways... enough about me. Time to get off my soapbox, and back on with this discussion about stupid people. ^_^

Another reason not to piss off those of other religions... they're a hell of a lot funner then those in my religious community.

This is where I almost feel sorry for those people who seem to get consumed by hate for some other group that really isn't bothering them.

I mean, there's so much cool stuff to enjoy, can't they see that spending their time on something so bitter and petty as hatred is just psychologically twisted? (well, obviously they can't, or they'd be trying to do something about it - and that would mean admitting *gasp* that they might be *wrong* about something)
