Sudden power is apt to be insolent, sudden liberty saucy; that behaves best which has grown gradually.
Well, even for Martin Sheen, this is bullshit; the White House doesn't have much to gain from a successful Schwarzenegger run for Governor (the more angry the California voters are with a Democrat still in office for the 2004 election, the more likely they are to produce a Republican senator)."The California recall is an effort to grab the state for the Republicans," Sheen said. "I suspect this came out of the White House. Frankly, it makes perfect sense after Florida."
Appeal to popularity, first of all (if Arnie can do the job, who gives a shit what the rest of the world thinks?). And Arnie is practically the epitome of the American dream; how is he more embarassing than Gary Coleman or Larry Flynt?"I think that we are the laughing stock of the world, with Arnold Schwarzenegger running [for] governor," Shepherd said.
What? More bullshit allusions to the fact that his father was a Nazi? He was a playboy in his youth? No one cares."I think he's a real hypocrite. I think he has a past that is going to come out, and I'm not going to mention what it is, but it's not going to be pretty."
Fucking braindead idiots.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.
Arnold will crush them all. If I could, I'd move to California just to cast my vote for him.
I can think of much more horrible tragedies that happend in California than if Arnold gets into office. Too bad Ms. Shepherd never paid attention in History class."That would be the worst tragedy in the history of California," Shepherd hyperventilated to "Access Hollywood."

Frankly, I don't understand all this talk about Hollywood being so left-winged - how does this explain the spy thriller genre, which exists only to present communists as diabolical and evil??theski wrote:The Hollywood left is lining up against The Terminator. Let the fun begin..

Of course, there might be many actors and actresses who hold left-winged viewpoints, but with all those anti-communist propaganda flicks spewed out by Hollywood during the Cold War, I don't think Hollywood's political climate is that uniform.

Well, there are a couple of factors. First, whereas in some of western Europe it was normal for labor union parties and moderate leftist parties to form sometimes coalitions with communists or near-communists, in America during the Cold War virtually everyone outside the extreme left was at least nominally anticommunist (even if they thought the Soviet Union was merely a noble experiment gone wrong, and not a serious evil).Simon H.Johansen wrote:Frankly, I don't understand all this talk about Hollywood being so left-winged - how does this explain the spy thriller genre, which exists only to present communists as diabolical and evil??theski wrote:The Hollywood left is lining up against The Terminator. Second, many Americans liberals were quite hawkish and strongly anticommunist. The big American labor unions were very hostile to communism, for instance, and both of our major open wars against Communist states were statrted by Democratic presidents. (Quick question for British posters: wasn't the post-war Labour party very hostile to communism, also? Or at least the leadership was?) This element of American liberalism is less eveident today than it once was, since a number of the more hawkish and Democrats ended up migrating to the Republicans in the 70's and 80's.
Thus, it's not neccesarily inconsistent to say that Hollywood is both liberal and anticommunist.

You'll notice that when the Times found out what Blair was doing, they fired his ass. Unlike the Post, which practices tabloid journalism.

Wrong! The Times did not fire Blair as soon as they found out he was fabricating stories and plagiarizing. That was found out over a year before he was dismissed. They didn't fire him until his shenanigans blew up in their faces and they were left with no alternative. Plenty of people at the NY Times knew ahead of time that he was unethical, and we've all heard about top management ignoring metropolitan editor Jonathan Landman's warning about Blair last year - "We have to stop Jayson from writing for the Times. Right now."Iceberg wrote:If you seriously believe that, I've got some beachfront property in Tucson to sell you.MKSheppard wrote:It's more reliable than the New York Times

Andrew Sullivan put it pretty well:
The NY Times is going to have to go some distance to reclaim its credibility as far as I am concerned. When you read the full account, it's clear that many people not only connected the dots but put their concerns in writing - at almost every step of the way in Blair's swift and short career. When the Metro editor can write an email that says it's time to ‘stop Jayson from writing for the Times. Right Now,’ over a year ago, it's inconceivable that the reporter in question should subsequently be assigned to a major role in a ‘flood the zone’ story like the Washington sniper case. Yet that is precisely what happened. In fact, after dozens of warnings, counseling leaves and alarm bells, Howell Raines even sends Blair an email congratulating him for ‘great shoe-leather reporting’ - for work that turns out to have been riddled with errors and fabrications! How could that happen? How does a rookie reporter, with Blair's record, get assigned a major role in such a story, produce a front-page scoop instantly, and never have an editor ask him who his sources are? When the scoop is immediately denied, trashed and rebutted, why does it take months for this to be investigated? How does a reporter whose former editor had written a memo demanding that he be removed from writing for the Times altogether get reassigned without his subsequent editor being informed of his record? Forget the affirmative action dimension. This is just recklessly bad management. It reminds me of the Catholic Church reassigning priests to new parishes without telling the parishioners of the priest's past. It smacks of a newsroom in which everyone is running scared of the big guy's favorite new hire, and so no one is able to stop a disaster from happening until it's too late.

Regardless, if you think the NYPost is unbiased journalism, you're either a fanatic or so gullible that you need to be castrated for the sake of the already badly polluted gene pool.

The problem is that a very vocal segment of the American Right thinks that anything to the left of it is at the very least misguided and more likely treasonable, communistic, or even terroristic.phongn wrote:You're confusing the American Left with communism. Yes, but when people read an NYPost article, they can take the bias into account automatically--it's, well, blatant. The New York Times? The articles were outright fabrications. You have to admit that's a bit harder to detect than grandstanding. One is cheap partisan trumpeting, and the other is a Pravda tactic.Iceberg wrote:Regardless, if you think the NYPost is unbiased journalism, you're either a fanatic or so gullible that you need to be castrated for the sake of the already badly polluted gene pool.

They're wrong. The Portuguese press and opinion makers like Arnhuld, and I guess Europeans in general too (Euronews presents him favourably). In fact, there's a general tone of sorrow for the fact that he can never become presidentDurran Korr wrote:Appeal to popularity, first of all (if Arnie can do the job, who gives a shit what the rest of the world thinks?).
