As I mentioned, it all really comes down to what you want the tank to be used for. Infantry support will be different than scout and recon; and tank-vs-tank superiority will be different from convoy escort.
The Japanese tanks were crap for tank-vs-tank work but in the element they were used-- essentially as portable MG nests and light guns against unarmed peasants, where roads were narrow and the jungles close in, they were just fine. But it was one tank that the M3 Stuart could actually own like a prison bitch, and that's saying something...
Somewhere in my vast volumes of WW2 info I have a picture of a Sherman crew in the Pacific Theater that had captured a little Japanese tank. They drove it up a ramp and parked it on the back deck of their Sherman, and it fit perfectly! They drove around like that, apparantly telling people it was their 'lifeboat'.

Actually it was 23 January, 1944 when the T-34/85 was officially accepted and the first examples reached the troops. T-34/85s saw the first combat in the spring of 1944 with 1st Guard Tank Army and since then took part in all the battles of the WWII.
