Hawaiians Death-Threaten Caucasian in Hawaiian school
This case has been making the rounds around here for the last few months. Here's a link to a local paper:
http://starbulletin.com/2003/08/22/news/index1.html
Short synopsis: Kamehameha Schools is an all-Hawaiian school founded by Bernice Pauahi Bishop, a Hawaiian princess and wife of American bigman Charles Reed Bishop. The school is part of Kamehameha estate, the largest privately owned estate in Hawaii. Its charter specifies that preference be given to Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian students, which has resulted in Kamehameha becoming an all-Hawaiian school.
But last year, a caucasian (or "haole") student was admitted into the school, causing a firestorm among Hawaiian activists who see Kamehameha as the last bastion of the old Hawaiian monarchy. Apparently the student put part-Hawaiian on his entrance application because his foster father is part-Hawaiian, but even after the mistake was discovered he was admitted anyway, on the basis that there were "no eligable Hawaiian students". A federal judge recently upheld the ruling. Kamehameha has always been a private school, for the upper-class and exceptionally gifted. So there's a clash between the school's educational status and its status among Hawaiian sovereigntists, many who still blame America for the 1893 overthrow of the monarchy.
Thoughts? Personally, I find it all pretty amusing.

The private school can make whatever rules it wants about race, provided they don't expect federal aid. I think it's a bit amusing that the Hawaiians are passionately defending the heritage of a tiny, totally undeveloped tribal monarchy that was finally defeated by a Sugar Company.

It wasn't America's fault that Hawaii had it's monarchy overthrown. During most of the 1800's, Americans who were wealthy or ex-soldiers and had nothing better to do decided to enter the glamorous world of Filibustering. Filibustering was the act of being a mercenarry that had the intent of overthrowing foriegn governments and trying to petition the IS for statehood. The most notable was William Walker who became president of nicruagua in the 1850 after helping revolutionaries overthrow the government. His offer of statehood was refused by the US congress.
As for the Hawaiians, The Sugar company felt the Hawaain Monarchy was getting the way of thier business, so like all filibusters before them helped American settlers of the island and pro-republican hawaiians overthrow the monarchy and proclaim a sugar company freindly republic.

Those where the days. That monarchy only even got control of the all the major islands by stealing and later capturing a few guns and small ships from passing traders.Pablo Sanchez wrote: I think it's a bit amusing that the Hawaiians are passionately defending the heritage of a tiny, totally undeveloped tribal monarchy that was finally defeated by a Sugar Company.

Not least because everyone in Nicaragua hated him and it would have required a major commitment of US troops to keep it under controlEmperorSolo51 wrote:It wasn't America's fault that Hawaii had it's monarchy overthrown. Yes. Being subjugated by the British East India company... not so bad, we're talking about a monopoly company that was bigger and better funded than many European countries. Being defeated by plantation owners and a relatively tiny corporation? It's time to realize that your heritage isn't so grandAs for the Hawaiians, The Sugar company felt the Hawaain Monarchy was getting the way of thier business, so like all filibusters before them helped American settlers of the island and pro-republican hawaiians overthrow the monarchy and proclaim a sugar company freindly republic.

Well, the US did send marines from the USS Boston (I think) to arrest the Queen (who was planning on rewriting her constitution to expand her powers from the "Bayonet Constitution" forced upon her brother, King David Kalakaua). The extremists of the so-called "sovereignty movement" don't really apply things to just the US government, though ... they're suspicious of any caucasian infringing on what they see as their birthright, their a'ina (land). It's a not-very-subtle and somewhat frightening racism - but all too familiar to those in the know about regional independence movements.
As for the sovereignty movement, it runs the gamut from those who would be content for "nation-within-a-nation" similar to that instituted for American Indians (and proposed by Senator Akaka [D-HI] in the "Akaka Bill") to all-out "pacifist militants" who want all foreigners to get out now, the monarchy restored, and life presumably to return to the way it was at the end of the 19th century (the last part is particularly nebulous - like many sepertatist movements, the primary concern seems to be in fighting the "colonial oppresors" with little thought given to the aftermath).

Except Jordan has the second best trained army in the Middle East and good equipment for it. A better comparision would be Shell oil taking over Gabon.HemlockGrey wrote:That's like the modern-day equivelent of Jordan being overthrown by Coca-Cola.

And Coca-Cola is probably much better funded and equipped than the sugar company. I'm adjusting for inflation, here.

That's not the end of it. It took a coalition of British,American costa rica, and Hundorous and Nicruaguan militaries to oust him as well as a union of Nicruagan Liberals and conservatives. He tried two more times and failed. In 1860, he tried one more time and was caught by the British and was handed over the Hondurans and was executed by Honduras.Pablo Sanchez wrote:

To be precise, it means "without breath", referring to the pale skin of early European explorers. So it's usually used to refer to white guys.Exonerate wrote:Haole doesn't mean caucasian, it means outsider. Kinda like Gaijin for the Japanese.

Aside from that iirc the marines didn't much more than policing the islands and placing the US Flag there. The sugar company had already done most of the conquering beforehand.Bob McDob wrote:Well, the US did send marines from the USS Boston (I think) to arrest the Queen (who was planning on rewriting her constitution to expand her powers from the "Bayonet Constitution" forced upon her brother,

Considering how much their culture screws them over militarily, that's a pretty good accomplishment. Considering that that place is a craphole, it's pretty whack.Sea Skimmer wrote:

Jordan doesn't have most of the cultural problems the rest of the Arab world has, largely thanks to King Hussein. The nation also has had quite good relations with Israel for a couple decades and good relations with the US and UK for much longer. Heck the UK recently gave Jordan a bunch of Challenger I tanks for basically the cost of delivery. Given Jordan's support for the war in Iraq I wouldn't be surprised if they get some other stuff soon as well. And unlike say Saudi Arabia, they've got soldiers who will make the best of it.Vorlon1701 wrote:

The official purpose of the marines was "to protect American interests" - but in actuality they played a fairly major role in arresting the Queen. It's questionable that would have made any difference whether it was Hawaiian or American troops that arrested her, though, since she was adamant in her desire to avoid any sort of bloodshed, because she was sure the courts would restore her. She was wrong, of course.Rubberanvil wrote:Aside from that iirc the marines didn't much more than policing the islands and placing the US Flag there.
