Well boys and girls it is that glorious time of year yet again. This year, instead of having dozens of National Football Leauge related threads to annoy our pesky European and Asian boardmates, i think it is a good idea to condense them all into one glorious thread. So post all of your arbitrary picks, taunts, statistical regurgitations and end-zone dances here!
that being said, the good Colonel would like to make the following predictions regarding both the last week of exhibition play, and the season in general.
the colonel's division picks for the 2003 season:
AFC
EAST: New England
NORTH: Baltimore (Pittsburgh is done)
SOUTH: Indy
WEST: KC
wildcards: Buffalo and Tennesee
NFC
EAST: Philly
NORTH: Da' Bears
SOUTH: Tampa (duh!)
WEST: St. Louis ( will rise again!)
wildcards: Giants and Green Bay

There are entirely too many uncertainties in the Bird's Nest this year. The running game will be improved with Buckhalter back and healthy, and Westbrook (Go Nova!) has a ton of potential, but how well will Duce perform? Will Freddy Mitchell ever live up to his draft day potential? At least the quarterback position is solid. Donovan is in the best shape of his life and both his backups can win in the NFL.
How in the world did the Eagles let Brian Mitchell get away? My prediction: in one of the Giants games, he's going to run one back for a touchdown. And I know punters come and go, but Sean Landetta could always be counted upon to place the ball where he should. The special teams are weaker without those two. I can't be bothered to evaluate all the fourth-string recievers and cornerbacks who make up the coverage and return teams.
Defense: I understand, on a certain level, why they let Douglas go. He's getting old, and with the money he was asking for, they'd be overpaying for him in a few years and they'd miss opportunities to sign younger, more promising players. But God damn it, I want to win a Super Bowl, and that would have been a lot easier WITH Douglas than without him. At least Green Bay will now learn the joys of Al Harris's bonehead penalties.
The rest of the NFC East: The Giants scare me. They hit their nadir in late 2001 and early 2002, and now they're recovering. The Eagles and Giants will split their series. Hopefully, the Eagles won't need that second win. Fun fact: the Eagles and Giants is one of the longest-running rivalries in the NFL. The lifetime regular season record is exactly even.
The Cowboys: Bill Parcells will make them better, but there's a lot of better between them and "good".
The Redskins: An unproven coach, and unknown quarterback, and some mercenaries hired from the Jets. Every year now is supposed to be Washington's big breakout year. I'll believe it when I see it.

The NFL sucks. I base that not on the quality of the game, but rather my location: Michigan. Holy god damn the Lions are pathetic. Jay Leno used to warm up with a few jabs to them every night.
Although the cover of this weeks TV Guide suggests "hope" for the Lions, they don't even have a damn article about it in the book! It's only on the fucking cover! Deceiving bastards.
College football, OTOH, owns the NFL. UofM CRUSHED Ohion State AND Michigan State last year. And if that's all that happens the entire season, then it's been a good year.

Every year that the Lions are so pathetic makes Barry Sanders' retirement all the more smarter on his part.Darth Garden Gnome wrote:The NFL sucks. As for the UofM, please ask them to take it easy on Iowa this year since they are playing in Iowa for their homecoming. We really don't want any hard feelings over last years game.

And you dare overlook the evil mad scientist of defense King Belichick? heathen! I really think they are going to stop the run (finally) this year...Rosevelt Coleman is going to be evil. We picked up Tyrone Poole out of Denver to fill Otis Smith's place at corner. Should fit in nicely next to Law and Milloy. My only concern is the running game. Antwain Smith isn't getting any younger and Kevin Faulk doesn't seem to be rising to the occasion. We'll see.
The rest of the East should be interesting...the Jets are hurting with Pennington out for what loks like the whole season. No way Testaverde is going to put up numbers anywhere near Pennington....he is just not capable of running a west coast style offense.
Miami will be Miami. Brian Griese, Oronde Gadsen and Patrick Surtain are not looking like they will be starting the first few weeks. That is a big deal because the 'fins need that big start to make up for their annual collapse in november/december. Having December games in New England and Buffalo doesn't help either.
Buffalo is looking like a contender. Bledsoe and Eric Moulds have a good thing going. and Bledsoe has a a couple decent secondary recievers in Clarence Coleman and Charles Johnson. Travis Henry has got some wheels too! The big problem is still the defense. I still see them contending for the wildcard though.

JEts Wise I actually think we can do pretty good, Testaverde is a good player, with a turnover problem but if you can bypass that we'll be fine. And if worst comes to worst we can always put Bollinger in and hope for the best.
Outside of that we have a couple good Running backs, three pretty good recievers, a decent defense, and a special teams thats tremendous to boot. We might not win teh super bowl, but we can atleast make it to the play-offs, maybe even the second round this year.
