An Old Sparring Partner has Returned...
Namely, Virus-X, whom I am throwing down the gauntlet to, if he reads this boards, to debate here.
http://sothis5.com/VirusX/Virus-X.html
Well folks, some time ago, back in October 2001, when the groups on Yahoo were still clubs, Virus-X, under the identity virus2k1, joined the little gang that debated on Star Trek and Star Wars, and argued some contriversial views, one of which (the nature of turbolasers) can be seen below.
Me: What ever the type of laser (I chose infrared because it is the most commonly referred to type of laser), the fact remains that onscreen, canon evidence, backed up by the books, and the technical manuals for SW ships, all point to the conclusion that SW weaponry does not have any qualities associated with the term laser in the real-life sense of the word.
Virus: Onscreen, you have NO evidence. They call turboLASERS, and they do not show any qualities that are not like laser, except for those written by non-scientifically inclined writers. The manuals (like Weapons and Technologies) don't say 'plasma'. People that continually claim the slower than light thing have yet to point to one source and quote it as saying as much.
Me: Whereas you could fire a laser and it appears to instantly hit the target, having travelled so fast, an SW weapon burst can
be seen. It doesn't matter of the beam from the laser is blocked and unblocked at intervals, we still would not be able to see it, and the effects would be virtually instantanious, unless the two targets were light years away from one another.
Virus: Again, these are special effects. In the Star Trek the Next Generation espisode "Conspiracy", I saw an old man DODGE phasers, and it specifically says in the canon tech manuals (TNG & DS9) that the beams travel at 1C. SPECIAL EFFECTS. Nothing more.
There's a healthy archive within the group of his comments and posts, which can be found here. Needless to say, they make for interesting reading.
After a while, Virus left the group, but made comments that he was making a website (which, when finished, will likely be associated with Darkstar's site, if Darkstar's update pages are anything to go by). Recently, he's been making arguments and noises in an MSN group, namely the Star Trek versus Star Wars group.
In short, Virus is not what one could call a good debater. He overlooked the visual evidence in front of him in favour of quotes from techinal manuals and even argued that the intent of the writers mattered when we argued over the topics that Star Trek and Star Wars bring up. As the quotes above show, he argued that the fact we saw turbolaser bolts is down to special effects, not any properties of turbolasers themselves. More to the point, a lot of his arguments kept coming back to 'plot device' or 'drama'. The idea of using visuals seemed absurd to him a lot of the time, though more than likely using visuals hurt his views about turbolasers, lol.
Interestingly, Virus did have a site of sorts (well, it was his own MSN group), where for a brief time you could see a couple of essays he'd written on the subject. For some reason, he locked people out of this group, and I haven't been able to even find it's location since, so it appears he's deleted it.

Heh. And silly me, I realised a while after the fact that I was in fact right (or at least, not wrong) when I used the term "tightly focused" in that talk about laser, seeing as "tightly focused" does not equate to "focused to a tiny point".

He won't come here. He has been challenged to do so before, but since he is a lying pussey he won't.
Watch for him to be selective with evidence (EG he'll keep quoting the SWTJ KT yield for a torpedo but ignores AOTC ICS), selecive quoting (EG that it takes a minimum of 30 mins for planetary shields to come on line when that is a maximum) and to be an out and out liar (EG claiming that Alderaan had no defenses despite the novelization stating otherwise)
Also, ask him if he is ever going to have the balls to put up his "tech counter" site, since when it was discovered here he promptly set it to members only so we couldn't see it.

He is both a liar and a wussy. He often tries to smoke his opponents with bullshit to prevent them from noticing his lies and stupidity. But he just doesnt succeed in that too well. Debated with him to quite lengths on several issues last year before he ran away, he seems to be even dumber now than he was then.

Yeah, it's the sack of shit allright. I found him a year or two ago on a private forum he'd been using to bash Mike Wong and flamed him to a crisp. After threatening acts of physical violence for a while, he gave up and fled in mortal terror. Par for the course really.

Virus is a little shit compared to this one guy im debating now. He INSISTS that a very small percentage of an earth like planet consists of metals. And he brings up CRUST composition numbers to back that up. On the top of that he also insists that the example of firepower from the Nights Hammer in Darksaber was well in the hundreds of kilotons range. And when i asked him how was that possible when a single bolt was mentioned to wipe out half a hectare of the jungle, he ignored that and went on with his bullshit.

Oh allright, http://pub28.ezboard.com/ftigerclawssci ... 21&stop=35 Its the Tigerclaw board. The
debate spranged up from razorboys claim how the SW tech has degradated thousand fold after the OR turned to the Empire based on Darksaber. He also wanted some asteroid calcs from TESB so it used Brian Youngs, one guy whos name i dont remember and Saxtons calcs. He currently believe that i made the Sacton calcs (which i did not really claim i did) and he is quick in insisting how ridicolous, baseless and against physics blah blah blah they are and im having fun time laughing my ass off.

I can't believe that one of those idiots thinks vaping an asteroid takes more energy than obliterating the surface of a planet.

Did you notice the earths composition bullshit he came up with? And he really has the gall to call me an idiot. I could be angry but hey, can you really be angry to retards?

Well basically since the Hoth asteroid field was formed from the collision of two planets, and those two planets were not gas giants. I reasoned that a very sizable percentage of the asteroid field composition vise would be metals. But he instead brought up some earths crust composition numbers and used them to counter my argument. Or in his opinion counter my argument.Darth Servo wrote:Didn't get that far before getting fed up.Rightous Fist Of Heaven wrote:Did you notice the earths composition bullshit he came up with?Psychological projection. And he really has the gall to call me an idiot.Yes. Ah yes, ive noticed that he has some severe mental problems. Much like RSA.
Well, retards just have problems getting things to their heads, its not necessarily upto them for decide since their brain are just fucked up. But yeah, i guess i too got a little bit fucking angry at him in my last reply
